Marta Kostyuk makes San Diego Open quarters in straight sets

Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, Daria Saville of Australia and Katie Boulter of England advanced to the quarterfinals of the Cymbiotika San Diego Open on Wednesday. Kostyuk continues to build on the form that saw her reach her first major quarterfinal last month at the Australian Open. The sixth seed knocked off the last remaining wild card by beating 18-year-old Taylah Preston of Australia, 6-4, 6-3. For Kostyuk, 21, it was almost like facing a mirror image of herself. “I was playing her for the very first time. She’s still very young. She reminds me a little bit of me,” said Kostyuk, who finished with 25 winners to […]

Astros close out Twins, advance to ALCS vs. Rangers

The Battle of Texas is on. One day after the Texas Rangers locked down a spot in the American League Championship Series, the Houston Astros clinched their seventh successive ALCS bid with a 3-2 triumph over the Minnesota Twins to win their division series 3-1. The Astros relied on the formula that has brought them so much postseason success in recent years, including during their World Series championship last year: home runs and pitching. Jose Abreu, their prized free agent signing over the winter, hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to put the Astros ahead 3-1, and […]

Diamondbacks erase early deficit again and beat Brewers 5-2 to sweep NL Wild Card Series

Two years after suffering through a 110-loss season, the Arizona Diamondbacks are spraying champagne and heading to the NL Division Series. They feel like they belong, too. “In ’22, you kind of saw the shift toward the end of the year, and then we came in this year and this is what we expected to do,” Zac Gallen said after he pitched the Diamondbacks to a 5-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night and a sweep of their NL Wild Card Series. “We expected to be playing in October.” It’s the first NL Division Series for the franchise since 2017. The Diamondbacks will take […]

Rays brush off ‘a last-place team,’ top Yanks after benches clear

Brandon Lowe homered and drove in four runs as the American League wild-card-leading Tampa Bay Rays defeated the New York Yankees 7-4 in a contentious matchup on Sunday and kept the road team winless in the series since June. Benches and bullpens emptied twice in the eighth inning after one of five hit batters, but no punches were thrown, and the Yankees lost their eighth consecutive series rubber game. “Looking at it in a different view, it’s a last-place team,” Lowe said. “We don’t need to worry about it. We need to focus up on what we need to do down the stretch. If they lose […]

Mets, batting champ Jeff McNeil reach $50M extension

National League batting champion Jeff McNeil and the New York Mets agreed Friday to a four-year, $50 million contract extension, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN, ensuring one of the team’s core players will stay in Queens as the Mets look to win their first World Series since 1986. McNeil, who turns 31 a week after Opening Day, was arranged to go to an arbitration trial with the Mets, where he was requesting $7.75 million and they offered $6.25 million. Instead, the gap spurred conversations about keeping McNeil past his remaining two years of arbitration that landed on buying out multiple free agent […]

Mets prep for playoffs with 9-2 rout of Nationals

Francisco Lindor and the New York Mets geared up for the playoffs with a 9-2 rout of the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, completing a fantastic regular season with the second-most victories in franchise history. Jeff McNeil won the major league batting crown without taking a plate appearance, and New York (101-61) finished with the same record as Atlanta atop the NL East. The defending World Series champion Braves had already clinched the division title Tuesday because they hold the season-series tiebreaker after going 10-9 versus the Mets. The only Mets team to win more regular-season games was the 1986 World Series champions at 108-54. Next up […]

Happ, Cards bullpen combine on 1-hitter, top Pirates 4-1

J.A. Happ combined with a trio of relievers on a one-hitter, Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong homered early and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the skidding Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 on Tuesday night. Happ (6-6) retired the first nine batters, then gave up rookie Hoy Park’s first career home run to lead off the fourth inning. ”I was able to get a couple of quick outs to manage the pitch count and (catcher Yadier Molina) was great back there and we were on the same page all night,” Happ said. “I was just trying to execute pitches and it turned out pretty well.” Making his second start for the Cardinals since […]

Green Bay Packers allowing 6,000 fans for divisional playoff game

The Frozen Tundra won’t be the completely empty tundra for the playoffs. The Green Bay Packers revealed Thursday that approximately 6,000 ticketed fans will be permitted to attend the team’s first playoff game, either Jan. 16 or 17 in the NFC divisional round. The Packers had not allowed fans at Lambeau Field during the regular season and allowed only about 500 employees, their families and selected frontline workers to attend over the final month of the campaign. The tickets will go to season-ticket holders who opted in over the summer. At the time, Packers president Mark Murphy said more than 80% of […]

Cardinals win NL Central; Brewers settle for wild card

The Cardinals on Sunday needed a win over the Cubs at home or a Brewers loss to the Rockies to win the National League Central for 2019. As it turns out, St. Louis handled its own business, as they homered three times en route to a 9-0 win over the Cubs. Ace Jack Flaherty pitched seven shutout innings, which means he’s allowed a total of 12 runs over his last 16 starts heading into the playoffs. The St. Louis win means that the Cardinals will advance to the National League Division Series against the Braves, who won the NL East. Game 1 is scheduled for Oct. 3 in Atlanta. The Brewers, meantime, […]

Marlins look to finish off Mets’ playoff hopes

The Mets will try to do their part to avoid elimination from contention Tuesday night, when they host the Miami Marlins in the second game of a four-game series. Noah Syndergaard (10-8, 4.22 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Mets against the Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara (5-14, 4.00 ERA) in a battle of right-handers. The Marlins delivered a big blow to the Mets’ already meager wild-card hopes Monday night, when Jorge Alfaro hit two homers, including a grand slam, in Miami’s 8-4 victory. The Mets (81-75) fell five games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the race for the National League’s second wild card and 5 1/2 games […]
