The Houston Texans are rewarding outside linebacker Brennan Scarlett with a one-year, $3.75 million extension, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson.
The extension will kick in after the 2019 season; as of now, Scarlett is on a $2.25 million restricted free agent tender. The deal will keep Scarlett in Houston through the 2020 season; as he’ll be an unrestricted free agent in 2021 free agency.
Former undrafted out of Stanford in 2016, Scarlett has slowly made a name for himself in Houston. In his first three seasons of play, the outside linebacker played as an outstanding special teamer and spot starter.
In 30 career games (eight starts), Scarlett has tallied 54 combined tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 5 quarterback hits, and 2 sacks.
During 2019 training camp, Scarlett has filled in for Jadeveon Clowney — amid his contract disputes. He’s performed well thus far; making correct adjustments whether pass-rushing or in coverage.
“He’s done a good job,” said coach Bill O’Brien during joint training camp with the Detroit Lions. “He’s a guy that — like I’ve been saying all training camp, [he’s] the smart, tough, dependable guy.”

Locking up Scarlett for another year on an affordable deal is a smart gamble into the 26-year-old’s development from practice squad member into a defensive contributor.
With Jadeveon Clowney yet to sign his franchise tender, Scarlett has been starting at his outside linebacker spot in training camp. Whitney Mercilus starts at the other outside linebacker spot.
The Miami Dolphins are interested in trading for Clowney and recently met with the pass-rusher, according to ESPN and multiple reports.
Clowney has met with first-year coach Brian Flores and other members of the Dolphins organization, which hopes to persuade the three-time Pro Bowler to accept a trade to Miami, according to ESPN and multiple reports.
The Texans have interest in Dolphins left tackle Laremy Tunsil, but Miami is believed to be unlikely to part with him in a Clowney deal, a league source told ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe.
There is interest in completing a deal, but a trade isn’t considered a guarantee or imminent at this time.
