The Detroit Tigers have placed JaCoby Jones on the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, the Tigers have recalled outfielder Victor Reyes from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. Jones left the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox with back spasms, and did not play in the nightcap. Brian Buckey of the Toledo Blade confirmed that Reyes was held out of the Mud Hens’ Wednesday evening matchup due to the pending call-up.
While Jones may not miss many games due to the All-Star break next week, the injury comes at a poor time for the 27-year-old center fielder. Jones is currently enjoying his best season to date, hitting .244/.313/.444. He has nine home runs on the year, just two shy of his career high, and has raised his OPS by 128 points from last season. He has only been worth 0.1 fWAR, however, due to poor advanced defensive metrics.

Jones’ performance isn’t just due to a hot couple weeks, either. Since May 1, Jones has hit .276/.342/.511 with an 8.2 percent walk rate. That’s a 121 wRC+, which would lead the team over a full season. As it stands, Jones still sits third on the Tigers with a 98 wRC+ for the year.
Reyes has only received limited playing time in the major leagues so far this season despite being recalled several times already. He is 2-for-8 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI in five games for the Tigers in 2019. Down in Toledo, however, Reyes has hit .302/.326/.489 with nine home runs and seven stolen bases in 65 games.
Jones will be eligible to come off the injured list on Sunday, July 14. If he only misses the minimum 10 days, he will miss just six games. The Tigers are off for four days next week during the All-Star break, and kick off their second half schedule with a road series against the Kansas City Royals.
