Electronic line-calling tops changes at US Open

Electronic line-calling will be used instead of line judges for U.S. Open games at all courts except the two largest arenas. There also will be three ball people instead of six at courts other than Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium. Those are among the modifications announced by the U.S. Tennis Association as it outlined plans for running its 2020 Grand Slam tournament amid the coronavirus pandemic. There will be no mixed doubles, juniors or wheelchair competition during the Aug. 31 to Sept. 13 U.S. Open. There also will not be any qualifying rounds. Men’s and women’s doubles will […]

Asmussen becomes winningest Churchill trainer

Hall of Fame horseman Steve Asmussen surpassed South Louisville native Dale Romans as the all-time leading trainer in Churchill Downs history when 4-year-old filly Drop Dead Gorgeous cruised to a 8 1/2-length triumph in Friday’s opener for win No. 738 beneath the historic Twin Spires. “If anyone knows American horse racing, they know what Churchill Downs means to the sport,” Asmussen stated. “This is a very significant honor. Djokovic wraps up charity event in Serbia

An emotional Novak Djokovic wrapped up the first leg of his charity tournament Sunday in Belgrade, Serbia, and his tears had nothing to do with his final standing. Djokovic’s Adria Tour, which he planned in conjunction with his charity foundation while he was in Spain amid the sport’s pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, featured a raucous weekend of tennis in his home country in front of capacity crowds. And though the world’s top-ranked player went just 2-1 in the event, the tournament’s success got the better of him late. “I am not crying because I got knocked out of the tournament, I […]

Detroit Tigers take Arizona State Slugger Spencer Torkelson No.1 in MLB draft

Major League Baseball kicked off its 2020 draft on Wednesday. For the second time in three years, the Detroit Tigers had the first overall pick, and this time they used it on Arizona State first baseman Spencer Torkelson. A righty-swinging slugger, Torkelson has been widely regarded as the class’ best hitter. Heading into the summer, CBS Sports ranked Torkelson as the No. 2 prospect in the draft. Torkelson becomes the best hitting prospect in the pitching-heavy Tigers system, dethroning outfielder Riley Greene, the No. 5 pick in last year’s draft. Over the winter, CBS Sports ranked Casey Mize (2018’s No. 1 pick) and Matt Manning as the […]

Away since his trip home from Saudi Arabia, Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman’s McKinzie returned to business June 7 and took the $200,000 Triple Bend Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park in a hand ride from Mike Smith. “This was a perfect out for him. He had a cozy post and he showed his class,” trainer Bob Baffert stated. “It was workmanlike, and this’ll really move him up for next time.” Baffert said the Triple Bend served as a prep for the July 4 Runhappy Metropolitan Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park, a race in which McKinzie was the runner-up last summer. Can you really Gamble without losing Money?

As everyone knows, whenever you gamble someone has to lose. That’s just the way gambling works. Since the house always wins it’s tempting to say you should just become the house. But even if you set up an underground casino you need money to cover the variance in the games you run. The only time the casino’s own money is on the line is when they start a new game or give a high roller authorization to make a ridiculously large bet. As soon as players start losing money on games the casinos replace their reserve funds from money the […]
