Phillies slugger Bryce Harper hits 3 homers for first hits of season

Bryce Harper’s first hit of the season was a big one. Same for his second. And his third. Harper homered in all three of his at-bats for Philadelphia during Tuesday night’s 9-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The two-time NL MVP went 0 for 11 while playing in three of the Phillies’ first four games. The 31-year-old Harper drove a 1-2 cut fastball from Graham Ashcraft deep to center in the first inning. The 420-foot solo shot had an exit velocity of 107.7 mph. He came up again in the fourth and hit another solo shot to right. The 367-foot homer on the […]

Houston Astros’ Ronel Blanco no-hits Toronto Blue Jays

Ronel Blanco, making his first start of the season, baffled the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night, pitching a no-hitter in the Houston Astros’ 10-0 victory. Blanco, coming off a modest 2-1 season in which he concluded with a 4.50 ERA, ignited an Astros club that was coming off a four-game sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees, giving Houston its first victory of the season and Major League Baseball its first no-hitter of the year. He threw 105 pitches, posting seven strikeouts along the way, with just two walks. When Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded out to end it, Blanco smiled broadly before raising his […]

Spurs’ Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan to miss rest of season

The San Antonio Spurs will be without Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan for the rest of the season, the team revealed on Monday. Vassell, who missed the Spurs’ last game versus the Golden State Warriors, underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed a stress reaction to the third metatarsal head in his right foot. Sochan initially injured his left ankle versus the New York Knicks last Friday. The Spurs said after meeting with outside experts, they have determined that arthroscopic surgery is the best approach. Saul strike earns Atletico Madrid hard-fought win at Villarreal

Substitute Saúl Ñíguez scored a late winner to give Atletico Madrid a hard-fought 2-1 triumph at Villarreal on Monday, as Diego Simeone’s side climbed back into LaLiga’s top four with eight matches left in the season. It was a much needed victory for Atletico after two consecutive losses and two wins in their last seven league matches had left them in danger of missing out on a Champions League spot next season. They were facing an in-form Villarreal side, who were on a four-game winning streak and undefeated in their last nine league matches, a run that earned Marcelino Garcia LaLiga’s Coach of Month award in […]

Danielle Collins had the perfect send-off at her final Miami Open, defeating Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday to capture the title in her home state before an adoring crowd that included Andre Agassi and Martina Navratilova. The 30-year-old Collins announced at the Australian Open that this season would be her last because she’s suffering from endometriosis, an ailment that affects the uterus. On her fourth match point, Collins hit a backhand crosscourt winner, then bent over for 10 seconds without moving. “That game took a lot out of me and Elena was pushing me all around the court,” Collins said. “At the […]

Igor Severino: There’s no excuse for biting opponent

Igor Severino, who was released from the UFC after biting his adversary last weekend, said there is “nothing that could justify” his actions that night. Severino, of Brazil, was disqualified in the second round of his UFC debut, after he bit down on Andre Lima’s left arm. The bite left a very visible mark, and quickly resulted in UFC CEO Dana White revealing Severino would not fight for the UFC again. White also awarded Lima the first-ever “Bite of the Night” $50,000 bonus. In an interview this week, Severino, 20, said he doesn’t remember biting Lima and doesn’t understand what […]
