Danielle Collins makes Charleston quarters after two-win day

Miami Open champion Danielle Collins continued an amazing run by winning two matches Thursday, defeating Ons Jabeur and Sloane Stephens to reach the quarterfinals of the rain-delayed Charleston Open. Collins, who has stated this will be her final season on tour, has won 10 consecutive matches and 20 of her past 21 sets. She and defending champion Jabeur played the first match of the day at the clay-court event after rain Wednesday led to several matches being postponed. None of it appeared to bother the 30-year-old Collins, who spent just over three hours on the court in the two matches combined. She topped Jabeur 6-3, […]

Marlins RHP Eury Perez to have Tommy John surgery

Miami Marlins right-hander Eury Perez will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the 2024 season, the team revealed Thursday. The decision came after Perez visited Dr. Keith Meister for the second time in approximately two weeks. He will have the procedure on his right elbow on Monday. “I know Eury is really frustrated,” Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix said. “He’s really disappointed, but he also understands that this is a minor setback in what’s going to be a really long career.” Perez initially was diagnosed with mild elbow inflammation, with surgery not being recommended at that point. He began playing catch […]

Sei Young Kim took advantage of ideal playing conditions Wednesday, shooting a 6-under 66 in the opening round of the T-Mobile Match Play. Celtics clinch NBA’s best record with runaway win against OKC

Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault likened the Celtics’ performance this season to that of a Ferrari. Boston’s latest triumph over the Thunder earned it yet another luxury with the playoffs fast approaching. Kristaps Porzingis had 27 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks, helping the Celtics power past the Thunder 135-100 on Wednesday night to secure the best record in the NBA and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. Boston, which won its 11th consecutive home match, improved to 60-16 on the season to notch its 14th 60-win season in franchise history. Pegula, Collins, Stephens move on in Charleston

Top-seeded Jessica Pegula rallied from a set down and defeat fellow American Amanda Anisimova 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in a second-round match at the Charleston Open on Tuesday night. Pegula had seven aces in the match and won despite capitalizing on 4-of-15 break points. Anisimova converted on 4-of-8 break points. Pegula stated Anisimova is tough to play because she is a great ball striker, and she can take the racket out of an opponent’s hands. “I just kind of had to buckle down, and I think I started being a little bit more active with my feet and pressuring her a little bit more […]

Houston Astros’ Ronel Blanco no-hits Toronto Blue Jays

Ronel Blanco, making his first start of the season, baffled the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night, pitching a no-hitter in the Houston Astros’ 10-0 victory. Blanco, coming off a modest 2-1 season in which he concluded with a 4.50 ERA, ignited an Astros club that was coming off a four-game sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees, giving Houston its first victory of the season and Major League Baseball its first no-hitter of the year. He threw 105 pitches, posting seven strikeouts along the way, with just two walks. When Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded out to end it, Blanco smiled broadly before raising his […]

Spurs’ Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan to miss rest of season

The San Antonio Spurs will be without Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan for the rest of the season, the team revealed on Monday. Vassell, who missed the Spurs’ last game versus the Golden State Warriors, underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed a stress reaction to the third metatarsal head in his right foot. Sochan initially injured his left ankle versus the New York Knicks last Friday. The Spurs said after meeting with outside experts, they have determined that arthroscopic surgery is the best approach.
