Major League Baseball cancels second week of season after discussions fail to produce CBA

Major League Baseball canceled the second week of the regular season Wednesday after days of discussion with the MLB Players Association failed to generate a new collective-bargaining agreement. The international draft, long part of negotiations but not until recently a central issue, scuttled talks Wednesday afternoon. A day earlier, the league had proposed tying an international draft that would cover amateurs from Latin America and Asia to the removal of direct draft-pick compensation, in which teams are penalized draft picks for signing top free agents. Players balked at the idea, rejected proposals from the league to address it and sent […]

While it remains to be seen when new Brooklyn Nets swingman Ben Simmons will be able to make his season debut as he continues to deal with a back injury, Nets coach Steve Nash stated Simmons will join up with his new team in Philadelphia on Wednesday and will sit on the bench with the team Thursday. Simmons, who was acquired from the 76ers last month along with Andre Drummond, Seth Curry and two future first-round picks in exchange for All-Star guard James Harden and Paul Millsap, is expected to be roundly booed Thursday after requesting a trade from the Sixers after last season, citing mental health concerns. Nash was quick with […]

New MLBPA proposal includes $5M reduction in pre-arbitration pool

The MLB Players Association gave a written collective bargaining agreement proposal to Major League Baseball on Sunday. It included a $5 million reduction to the union’s last offer in a pre-arbitration bonus pool, but it did not include any changes to its competitive balance tax proposal, according to sources familiar with the situation. The meeting in New York lasted 95 minutes with the union suggesting afterward that the two sides meet again Monday. Deputy commissioner Dan Halem and union chief negotiator Bruce Meyer met after Sunday’s meeting, but the league stated it will get back to the players about meeting […]

MLB cancels first 2 regular-season series after MLBPA rejects league’s final proposal

Major League Baseball has canceled Opening Day, with commissioner Rob Manfred revealing Tuesday the sport will scrap regular-season games over a labor dispute for the first time in 27 years after acrimonious lockout talks collapsed in the hours before management’s deadline. Manfred stated he is canceling the first two series of the season that was set to start March 31, dropping the schedule from 162 games to likely 156, at most. Manfred said the league and union have not made plans for future negotiations and that players won’t be paid for missed games. “My deepest hope is we get an […]
