Simona Halep gets past Amanda Anisimova in French Open rematch

Simona Halep had no trouble reversing the result of her loss to Amanda Anisimova at last year’s French Open. Halep secured the rematch 6-0, 6-1 in just 54 minutes on Friday to reach the fourth round. Anisimova made 32 unforced errors to Halep’s seven. The top-seeded Halep extended her winning streak to a career-best 17 matches as she seeks a third Grand Slam title. She won the trophy at Roland Garros in 2018. Anisimova upset Halep, 29, in straight sets in the quarterfinals in Paris in 2019. But this one went Halep’s way from the beginning thanks in part to the 19-year-old Anisimova’s […]

Serena Williams withdraws from French Open

Serena Williams suddenly ended her latest bid to tie the record for the most Grand Slam singles titles early. She withdrew from the French Open on Wednesday due to an Achilles injury. “I’m struggling to walk, so that’s kind of a tell-tale sign that I should try to recover,” the tennis player stated during a press conference. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, injured her Achilles in a U.S. Open semifinal loss to Victoria Azarenka earlier this month. She was set to play Tsvetana Pironkova on Wednesday. But after a “very short” warm up, she and her coach decided it […]

Chicago Bears’ Nick Foles to be starter QB, Tarik Cohen has torn ACL

Nick Foles will be the starter at quarterback for now on after he rallied the Chicago Bears to a comeback triumph over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday in relief of Mitchell Trubisky. The announcement was made by coach Matt Nagy, who also said tests confirmed that running back Tarik Cohen has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the campaign. Nagy benched Trubisky in favor of Foles with Chicago trailing by 16 points in the third quarter. Foles responded by throwing three second-half touchdown passes, including the game-winning 28-yard strike to wide receiver Anthony Miller just after the two-minute warning. Foles also had touchdown passes to Allen Robinson and Jimmy Graham. […]

Toronto Blue Jays clinch playoff spot

The Toronto Blue Jays have clinched a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2016 with Thursday’s 4-1 victory over the Yankees at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, N.Y., and now the real fun begins. While Ryu and contributions from the young core perfectly fit the Blue Jays’ plan to return to the postseason, so many other parts to this story don’t. This will be the first and, hopefully, the last time that Toronto clinches with just its 30th victory of a shortened season, and no one ever expected this celebration to take place in Buffalo. It might all […]

The Los Angeles Lakers seek to take another commanding lead while the Denver Nuggets try to avoid another huge hole when the clubs meet in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals on Thursday night at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando. The third-seeded Nuggets got back into familiar territory — a 2-1 series deficit — when they held off a late Lakers rally for a 114-106 triumph in Game 3 on Tuesday night. They have lost Game 4 in each of their first two series versus Utah and the Los Angeles Clippers, however, to fall behind […]

Djokovic back to winning ways in Rome

Novak Djokovic turned the page on his contentious U.S. Open exit and started his claycourt season with a convincing 6-3 6-2 triumph over wildcard Salvatore Caruso in the second round of the Italian Open on Wednesday. The world number one was disqualified in New York after unintentionally hitting a line judge with a ball during his fourth round match versus Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta. Djokovic’s frustration boiled over after dropping his serve versus Carreno Busta in the opening set at Flushing Meadows but 10 days on in Rome he did not face a single break point in an imperious display […]

INEOS in link to Mercedes Formula 1 buy-in

Ineos could move from team sponsor to team owner with the Daily Mail reporting that the company is ‘close to signing a £700million deal’ to buy the Mercedes F1 team. Earlier this year Ineos, one of the world’s largest chemical producers, teamed up with Mercedes in a five-year contract. At the time Ineos owner Jim Ratcliffe and Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff called the deal a “partnership”, not a sponsorship, and one that was worth £100m to the Formula 1 team. However, it now looks as if all that could develop ownership. According to the Daily Mail, Ineos has agreed to buy ’70 per […]
