Falcons release starting cornerback Robert Alford

Tuesday evening, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Falcons had released veteran cornerback Robert Alford. According to the report, the former second-round pick out of Southeastern Louisiana was scheduled to make $8.5 million during the 2019 season. However, Atlanta could release him while only suffering a $1.2 million cap hit. His release leaves an open spot across from Desmond Trufant, which the team will likely try to fill during the 2019 NFL Draft. Alford was obviously disappointed by the move considering that he has been a key member of this defense since 2013. He posted a farewell message on his Twitter account, expressing his love […]

Jerry Blevins gets minor league deal

Signing a left-handed reliever wasn’t as high up on the A’s list of priorities as starting pitching or catcher, but they may have just filled that need before the other two. A familiar face is back with the organization as the club signed Jerry Blevins to a minor league deal Monday. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Blevins would earn a $1.5 million salary if he makes the big league club, and he should have a good shot given the current state of the bullpen. Ryan Buchter is the only left-hander on the A’s 40-man roster. While […]

A’s closer Blake Treinen wins arbitration case

Closer Blake Treinen won his arbitration case against the Oakland A’s, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Treinen is now slated to make $6.4M for the 2019 season, with one more season of arbitration eligibility remaining in 2020. The A’s had submitted a bid of $5.6M. With this victory, Treinen earns a $4.25M raise on his 2018 salary, which Passan notes is a record jump for a second-time arbitration-eligible player. Of course, the Athletics were the beneficiaries of a significant jump in production from Treinen this season as well, as their closer recorded 11.2 K/9 en route to his first All-Star appearance, a sixth-place finish in […]

Nolan Arenado, Colorado Rockies agree to 1-year deal

Nolan Arenado produces big numbers whether he steps into the batter’s box or up to the negotiating table. The All-Star third baseman and the Colorado Rockies agreed to a $26 million deal to avoid arbitration on Thursday, the largest one-year salary for an arbitration-eligible player. “It’s a great number. Very happy,” Arenado wrote in a message to The Associated Press. He and his side met with Rockies owner Dick Monfort and general manager Jeff Bridich to hammer out the historic deal. Josh Donaldson set the previous mark at $23 million with Toronto last season. The 27-year-old Arenado was set to pass that record […]

Redskins hire Rob Ryan as inside linebackers coach

The Washington Redskins have hired longtime NFL defensive guru Rob Ryan as inside linebackers coach. The team announced the move Wednesday, a day after promoting Kevin O’Connell to offensive coordinator on coach Jay Gruden’s staff. Ryan most recently served as the Buffalo Bills’ assistant head coach for defense in 2016. Before Buffalo, Ryan served as defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints from 2013-2015, Dallas Cowboys in 2011 and 2012, Cleveland Browns in 2009 and 2010 and Oakland Raiders from 2004-2008. His 2013 Saints’ defense ranked second in passing defense and fourth in points allowed. Redskins players should be excited […]

Red Sox add potential bullpen piece in Jenrry Mejia

Boston reportedly signed former Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia to a minor league contract with an invite to major league camp. The deal is worth $625,000 if he makes the major league roster, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. If Mejia has finally learned from past mistakes, he could be a pleasant surprise for a Red Sox team that appears to need bullpen help. Mejia was suspended for life on Feb. 12, 2016, after his third positive test for a banned steroid. The drug agreement allowed him to apply a year later for reinstatement that would be effective a minimum of […]

Reliever Shawn Kelley agrees to 1-year deal with Rangers

The Texas Rangers have reportedly signed free-agent reliever Shawn Kelley to a one-year deal according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.  Kelley will receive a $2.5 million base and another $500,000 possible in incentives. He also has a $2.5 million club option for 2020 with a $250,000 buyout. The Rangers have not confirmed the deal, but Kelley has passed his physical. Kelley split last season between the Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics, totaling a 2.94 ERA in 49 innings. The 34-year-old has played for five different teams during his 10-year major league career, but he looked as good as ever over the past two months of last season. After being […]

Bears DC Chuck Pagano not interested in again being head coach

Chuck Pagano interviewed for head coaching positions with the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers before accepting the Bears’ offer for him to be their defensive coordinator. But the former Indianapolis Colts head coach chuckled when asked if he was still harboring ambitions to return to that role.  “I’m not,” Pagano said. “I’ve done it. I’m motivated to just help coach (Matt) Nagy be successful, help this organization be successful, help these kids grow and develop. That’s my motivation, is to be the best I can be for this organization, for the McCaskey family, for coach Nagy and for these […]

Pomeranz is very familiar with the NL West, having pitched for Colorado and San Diego, and also knows the Bay Area. Chiefs fire DC Bob Sutton following loss to Patriots

The Kansas City Chiefs announced they’ve fired defensive coordinator Bob Sutton after a disappointing season on that side of the ball. “Bob is a good football coach and a great person,” head coach Andy Reid said in a statement released by the team. He continued: “He played an integral role in the success of our team over the last six seasons. I’ve said before that change can be a good thing, for both parties, and I believe that is the case here for the Chiefs and Bob. This was not an easy decision, but one I feel is in the best interest of the Kansas City […]
