Gordon Hayward sprains ankle in workout

The Boston Celtics forward twisted his right ankle during a workout in Boston on Tuesday and likely will be questionable for Thursday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, head coach Brad Stevens revealed Wednesday during an interview on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak & Bertrand.”

“He actually stayed back in Boston (during the All-Star break) and worked out a bunch of days in a row, and unfortunately yesterday twisted his ankle in one of those workouts,” Stevens said. “So, we’re going to get that reevaluated this morning.”

According to Stevens, Hayward suffered the injury playing 1-on-1 with Semi Ojeyele at the Celtics’ practice facility during a workout that included Brad Wanamaker and an assistant coach.

Fortunately for Boston, Hayward twisted his right ankle, not the left ankle he severely injured in October 2017 that required multiple surgeries and caused him to miss the entire 2017-18 season. Stevens suggested Hayward’s injury is “not a long-term thing”.

“It’s not a huge issue by any means,” Stevens said. “We anticipate he’ll be back within a short amount of time.”

The 28-year-old has fought to regain his former form all season but seemed to turn a corner before the All-Star break. In his last five games, Hayward averaged 17.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists.

For the season, Hayward is averaging 11.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 26.0 minutes per game.

His final three games before the All-Star break featured 19, 26, and 18 point performances, and he also seemed to be getting into his 3-point groove, sinking 9-16 deep balls in the span. It looked like the start of a new Hayward, so the Boston Celtics will have to hope that the injury doesn’t derail his progress. At 37-21 on the season, the Celtics sit in fourth place in the East, 6.5 games behind the 43-14 Bucks.
