Marlins acquire All-Star Luis Arraez in trade with Twins

The Marlins and Twins executed a long-rumored trade Friday, with American League batting champion Luis Arraez heading to Miami for right-hander Pablo Lopez and a pair of prospects, it was announced. The deal, variations of which the teams have discussed for months, brings a much needed bat to the Marlins, adding to their winter signing of Jean Segura, who’s expected to play third base. The cost was significant, though. In addition to Lopez, a talented starter who slots in toward the top of Minnesota’s rotation, the Marlins will send shortstop Jose Salas and outfielder Byron Chourio, two well-regarded teenagers, to the Twins. “We’ve talked about it quite often, wanting to add offense […]

Cubs, first baseman Mancini agree on 2-year deal

Free agent first baseman Trey Mancini is in agreement with the Chicago Cubs on a two-year deal which includes an opt out clause after the first season, sources told ESPN on Saturday night. Mancini, 30, spent his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles before being traded last summer to the Houston Astros, where he played a part-time role in their run to the World Series title. He struggled with the Astros, hitting just .176 in 165 regular season at-bats. He hit 18 home runs split between the two teams and made a key defensive play at first for the Astros during the World Series. Looking for the […]

MLB players from Cuba allowed to represent home country in WBC

The United States will permit Major League Baseball players from Cuba to represent their home country in the World Baseball Classic next year. The decision revealed Saturday in a news release by the Baseball Federation of Cuba (FCB) could be a big step in once again turning Cuba’s national team into heavy hitters on an international stage. Major League Baseball confirmed Monday that the U.S. granted the license to FCB. It clears the way for MLB stars such as Jose Abreu, Yordan Alvarez, Randy Arozarena, Yoan Moncada and Luis Robert to play for Cuba in the WBC in March if they choose to accept a potential invitation. Justin Verlander wins third AL Cy Young by unanimous vote

Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander won his third American League Cy Young Award on Thursday, joining a distinguished club with fewer than a dozen members throughout baseball history. He did so unanimously. And he did so under unprecedented circumstances — as a 39-year-old coming off Tommy John surgery, which kept him off a major league mound for most of the past two years. It was all rooted in positive thinking. When Verlander decided to surgically repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in September 2020, he thought not about his age but about a percentage: 89%. That, he told MLB Network before being announced […]

Seattle Mariners’ Julio Rodriguez named AL Rookie of the Year

Julio Rodriguez grew up in Loma de Cabrera, a small Dominican town of roughly 20,000 located near the Haitian border. Before him, the only prominent baseball player from there was Rafael Furcal, an All-Star shortstop through the 2000s. Rodriguez looked up to Furcal as a kid. He remembers the parade that the city organized for him and all the fanfare that came with it. Now Rodriguez will get one of his own. When the Seattle Mariners’ dynamic young center fielder returns home this offseason, a parade will take place in his honor. It will be a holiday in his hometown. “It’s gonna […]

Royals hire Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro as manager

The Kansas City Royals hired Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro as manager Sunday, turning over the young core of a rebuilding franchise to a forward-thinking manager with experience winning in a small market. Quatraro replaces Mike Matheny, who was fired as part of a wide-spread shakeup within the Royals after a 65-97 finish for their sixth consecutive losing season. Quatraro was chosen by Royals general manager J.J. Picollo, who took over as head of the club’s baseball operations after the firing of longtime front-office executive Dayton Moore. “We are extremely excited to have Matt leading our club and core of talent,” Picollo […]

Los Angeles Dodgers’ Walker Buehler undergoes second Tommy John surgery, flexor tendon repair

Los Angeles Dodgers star right-hander Walker Buehler underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career on Tuesday, officially ending his season and likely keeping him out for 2023 as well. “There’s no sugarcoating it,” said Andrew Friedman, president of baseball operations. “It was a tough blow but we’ll get him back. I know he’s already itching.” The 28-year-old Buehler last pitched June 10, when elbow discomfort forced him from the match. With imaging on his elbow unclear, Dr. Neal ElAttrache planned surgery for Tuesday during which he would determine whether Buehler needed a full reconstruction of his ulnar collateral ligament. […]

Alvarez homers as Astros down Yankees 7-5 for DH sweep

The Houston Astros opened the second half of the season by sweeping the New York Yankees in a doubleheader Thursday to inch closer in the standings to the team with baseball’s best record. Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman both homered and combined for five RBI as the Astros completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory in Game 2. Chas McCormick added a two-run home run for the Astros, who won the season series 5-2. The Yankees are 64-30 and Houston’s two wins Thursday improved the team to 61-32. “You want to get off to a good start, and I think everybody came in ready to play,” Bregman said. […]

Texas Rangers trade Willie Calhoun to San Francisco Giants for Steven Duggar

The San Francisco Giants acquired Willie Calhoun on Thursday, sending outfielder Steven Duggar to Texas for the outfielder who was the main return for the Rangers when they traded pitcher Yu Darvish five years ago. It will be a homecoming for Calhoun, and a move he requested after being sent to the minors on May 1. The 27-year-old was born in the East Bay city of Vallejo and attended Benicia High School. “We wish Willie the best in his opportunity with San Francisco,” Rangers president Jon Daniels said. “It’s a fresh start for him, as well as being close to home.” San Francisco also gets cash in the […]

Aaron Judge ‘disappointed’ after failing to reach extension with New York Yankees ahead of Opening Day deadline

Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge, speaking to reporters Friday, expressed frustration at not concluding a long-term contract extension with the club with which he wants to spend the rest of his major league career. “I’m just disappointed because I have been vocal about wanting to be a Yankee for life,” Judge stated after the Yankees’ 6-5 extra-innings win over the Boston Red Sox on Opening Day. “I want to bring a championship back to New York. I want to do it for the fans here. This is home for me. And I’m not getting that done right now. It stinks, but I got a job to […]
