Lakers’ LeBron James confirms return for 21st NBA season

There’s still time left on the clock for LeBron James’ career. The Lakers star revealed Wednesday night at the ESPYS in Los Angeles that he will continue playing. James openly pondered retirement after the Lakers’ playoff sweep by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference finals, but he will become the sixth player in NBA history to play in his 21st season or beyond — joining Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett, Robert Parish, Kevin Willis and Vince Carter, who has the record with 22. “I don’t care how many more points I score or what I can or cannot do on the floor,” James said after accepting the […]

Carlos Alcaraz tops Arthur Rinderknech in Queen’s Club opener

Alcaraz won 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) versus the No. 83-ranked Rinderknech, a French player who only found out he was playing following the withdrawal of Arthur Fils a couple of hours before the match. Alcaraz faced difficulties in dealing with Rinderknech’s big serve and net coverage in what was the No. 2-ranked Spaniard’s seventh career match on grass, and first outside Wimbledon. Astros’ Jose Altuve resumes baseball activities, return not set

Jose Altuve restarted some baseball activities this week, but there still isn’t a timetable for when Houston’s star second baseman will return to the team. Altuve fractured his right thumb in the World Baseball Classic and had surgery to repair the injury March 22. After his surgery, Astros general manager Dana Brown stated he would be out at least eight weeks. It has been six weeks so far, and while Altuve was cleared to return to baseball activities this week — including throwing, running and fielding — he hasn’t been cleared to swing. “I think right now it’s hard to tell,” […]

Paris Secret Goes Last To First To Win Providencia

Paris Secret, making her second start stateside after starting her career in Ireland, swept past the spent early leaders and held off fellow closer Pleasant Wave  to acquire the April 29 Providencia Stakes (G3T) by three-quarters of a length at Santa Anita Park. Heavily favored Ancient Peace , purchased for $650,000 at Keeneland’s January Horses of All Ages Sale, could not resist going with pacesetter Broadway Girls , who blitzed through fractions of :23.22 and :46.15, which proved a difficult clip to sustain at the Providencia’s 1 1/8-mile distance. After six furlongs in 1:10 the early leaders came to the top of the stretch well clear of […]

Draymond Green gets 1-game ban; Sabonis questionable for Game 3

The NBA has suspended Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green for one game for stepping on the chest of the Sacramento Kings’ Domantas Sabonis, the league revealed Tuesday night. “The suspension was based in part on Green’s history of unsportsmanlike acts,” the NBA said in a statement. Green will serve his suspension Thursday when the Warriors host the Kings for Game 3 at Chase Center. Sacramento holds a 2-0 lead in the series. The incident between Green and Sabonis occurred with 7:03 left in the fourth quarter of the Kings’ 114-106 Game 2 win Monday. After Sabonis slipped and fell in the paint, he grabbed Green’s […]

Wild On Ice Springs 35-1 Upset In Sunland Park Derby

Frank Sumpter’s homebred Wild On Ice outdueled a determined late challenger and got clear in the closing strides to collect the $600,000 Sunland Derby (G3) as the longest shot in the field Sunday at Sunland Park in New Mexico. Sent off at 35-1 odds and ridden by veteran Ken Tohill, Wild On Ice tracked from third through six furlongs, then went six wide through the second turn before snatching the lead in upper stretch.
