Los Angeles Lakers need steady play from Russell Westbrook with roster depleted, acting head coach David Fizdale says

The Los Angeles Lakers have lost three matches in a row, have four players and their head coach in the NBA’s health and safety protocols and are still reeling from the news that Anthony Davis is expected to miss at least a month with a sprained MCL in his left knee. As the team tries to weather the maelstrom of maladies it is facing, former league MVP and nine-time All-Star Russell Westbrook has taken it upon himself to try to pull them out of it. However, acting head coach David Fizdale — filling in for Frank Vogel while he is recovering from COVID-19 — said the […]

New York Mets hire Buck Showalter as new manager

The New York Mets have hired Buck Showalter as their new manager, team owner Steven Cohen revealed Saturday on Twitter. Showalter received a three-year contract, according to a person familiar with the deal. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the length of the agreement had not been announced. Showalter, 65, takes over for Luis Rojas, who was fired after a season in which the team held on to first place for 103 days but ultimately concluded 77-85 and missed the playoffs. Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada and Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro also were candidates for the […]

The Pittsburgh Pirates have hired former Milwaukee assistant Andy Haines as hitting coach. Haines replaces Rick Eckstein, who was fired in August. Haines spent the last three seasons as the hitting coach in Milwaukee before being let go in October. Haines joins one of the worst offensive teams in the major leagues. Garland also had six assists as Cleveland won for the fifth time in seven games, earning its most lopsided home victory of the season. New York Yankees designate Clint Frazier, Rougned Odor, Tyler Wade for assignment

Clint Frazier’s tenure with the Yankees might have ended after five unfulfilling campaigns when New York designated him for assignment Friday to open a roster spot for a prospect ahead of the winter meeting draft. Frazier can be claimed by another major league team off waivers. If he is not, he could be assigned outright to the minors, but he would have the right to reject the assignment and become a free agent because he has at least three years of major league service. Infielders Rougned Odor and Tyler Wade also were designated for assignment. Now 27, Frazier was the fifth pick overall in the 2013 […]

Los Angeles Dodgers’ Andrew Heaney confident he’ll bounce back after rough ’21

Andrew Heaney is eager to bounce back from a rough season. The Los Angeles Dodgers consider he can too, with some adjustments. The free agent left-hander signed an $8.5 million, one-year deal last week that brings him back to Southern California, where he pitched for the Angels from 2015 until getting shipped to the New York Yankees at the July trade deadline. He was a combined 8-9 with a 5.83 ERA last season. He fared worse in New York, where he was 2-2 with a 7.32 ERA in 12 games, including five starts, after the swap. “I didn’t turn it around, and that’s something I […]

Los Angeles Lakers win second straight in OT, saying poor showing in Portland provided a push

Following a second straight overtime victory, this one coming 120-117 versus a strong Miami Heat team on Wednesday, Anthony Davis stated a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers last weekend might have been a turning point in the Los Angeles Lakers’ young season. “After that Portland loss, we took that personally,” Davis said of Saturday’s 115-90 defeat, a game in which L.A. trailed by as many as 34 points. “We’re not that type of team. No energy. No effort. A little bit of selfishness. And we just tried to change that.” Playing without LeBron James for the fourth consecutive game because of an abdomen strain and losing two more […]

Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis exits with stomach illness; team says not COVID-related

A stomach illness caused Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis’ night to end prematurely during Saturday’s 105-90 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, according to the team. Davis exited the match with 4:51 left in the first quarter. He went straight to the locker room and did not return. The illness is not COVID-19 related, according to a team spokesperson. Head coach Frank Vogel said Davis tried to play Saturday despite vomiting four times before tip-off. Looking for the best online betting site and Live betting?
