Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie, misses cut at U.S. Junior Amateur

Tiger Woods watched his son, Charlie, shoot a 10-over 80 on Tuesday and miss the cut at 22 over through two rounds at the U.S. Junior Amateur. The 15-year-old Woods, who earned a spot in the 264-player field last month, concluded near the bottom of the pack. The top 64 players advance to match play, which starts Wednesday. The 36-hole championship match is Saturday. Woods did fare better on the Oakland Hills South Course, which Ben Hogan dubbed “The Monster,” than he did with an opening 12-over 82 on the North Course. Woods got off to a solid start on Day […]

Harry Hall chipped in for birdie from 45 feet on the third hole of a playoff Sunday to win the ISCO Championship for his first PGA Tour title, just days before the birth of his first child. “Due date’s Friday. She’s scheduled to induce on Tuesday just because I was at a point in the FedEx Cup where I kind of needed to play more,” Hall said about wife Jordan. “She would do anything for me. She’s a star and, hopefully, she can do whatever she wants now. I might not play next week. I probably won’t.” Looking for the best […]

The Evian Resort Golf Club-hosted event over the coming days dovetails into three more LPGA events, Olympic competition — in which Korda will represent the United States — and then a string of three straight $2 million-plus purses through the end of August. Sergio Garcia put on clock, fails to qualify for Open Championship

Sergio Garcia, after complaining to officials for being put on the clock for slow play in his final qualifier for the Open Championship, again failed to make the field for the year’s final major Tuesday. The 44-year-old member of LIV Golf came up two strokes short after shooting 71 and 70 over two rounds at Liverpool’s West Lancashire Golf Club, one of four sites hosting final qualifying Tuesday. His score of 3 under tied for sixth, with only four advancing from West Lancashire to Royal Troon, where The Open will take place July 18-21. “I come here and I try […]

PGA Tour creates sponsor exemption for Tiger Woods, cites ‘exceptional lifetime achievement’

The PGA Tour has created a special sponsor exemption for 15-time major champion Tiger Woods — and Woods alone — based on his “exceptional lifetime achievement,” the tour told its members in a memo Tuesday night. The sponsor exemption would be available for Woods to compete in the eight signature events, which feature limited fields, increased prize money and FedEx Cup points. Woods, an 82-time winner on the PGA Tour, wouldn’t otherwise qualify for the signature events with $20 million purses because he isn’t playing enough competitive golf after returning to the tour from serious injuries suffered in a car wreck in […]

Scottie Scheffler brushes off being ‘target’ at U.S. Open

Even though Scottie Scheffler won in five of his last eight starts and is an overwhelming betting favorite to capture his third major championship victory at this week’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, the world No. 1 golfer insists that he doesn’t feel like there’s a target on his back. “Like I said, when we start the tournament week, we’re all at even par and it’s not like anybody is out there playing defense,” Scheffler said Tuesday. With his 1-stroke victory at last week’s Memorial Tournament, Scheffler became only the fourth PGA Tour player in the past 60 seasons to pile […]

Jack Nicklaus would like to see the best golfers in the world in the same place more than four times a year, but figuring out how is another matter. Speaking on Tuesday ahead of the Memorial Tournament this week, where he is the tournament host, the golf legend was asked how critical he thinks it is to reunite men’s professional golf and stated it’s “a question I don’t know how to answer.” The Memorial is one of the PGA Tour’s signature events, and most of the top-ranked players in the world will play for a $20 million purse. Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning at age 30, one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial.
