Belmont Stakes could be moved to Saratoga Race Course for 2024, ’25

The Belmont Stakes could be moved to Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York as soon as next year, an earlier-than-anticipated move for the third leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. The New York Racing Association’s hope is to hold the Belmont at historic Saratoga in 2024 and 2025. The move, which had already been committed to for 2025 because of a $455 million renovation of Belmont Park, is subject to the approval of an oversight board and the New York State Gaming Commission. Matt Winn will be extended to 1 1/8 miles next Sunday at Ellis

Faced with a dilemma on next Sunday’s running of the Grade 3, $400,000 Matt Winn Stakes, Ben Huffman did not hesitate Saturday about whether the race would be shortened or lengthened to fit Ellis Park. “It’s going to be a mile-and-an-eighth,” said Huffman, the vice president of racing for Churchill Downs Inc. “If you look at the PPs, those are two-turn horses.” Fed regulators push Churchill Downs to move races to Ellis The Matt Winn, a race for 3-year-olds, has been run the last 12 years at 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs, where racing will be suspended after this weekend. Kentucky Derby winner Mage will run at the Preakness on May 20

Kentucky Derby winner Mage will run in the 148th Preakness following an encouraging workout at Churchill Downs, his co-owner stated. Mage galloped about 1½ miles at a brisk pace with exercise rider J.J. Delgado aboard on a cloudy but mild Friday morning at the track. Co-owner and bloodstock agent Ramiro Restrepo stated the chestnut colt was “thriving” with good energy levels after his latest training session since winning the 149th Derby, paving the way for the horse to enter the Triple Crown’s second jewel at Pimlico in Baltimore. “He’s had a magnificent week of training,” Restrepo said with co-owner Chase […]

Mage wins Kentucky Derby overshadowed by 7 horse deaths at Churchill Downs

After seven deaths raised questions about the future of horse racing, Mage earned a surprising Kentucky Derby triumph on Saturday, capping a nerve-rattling day that included two more fatalities ahead of the 149th edition of the world’s most famous race. Mage, a 15-1 shot, had only one victory in his career, giving little indication that he could triumph versus 17 rivals in a race that is not kind to the inexperienced. Still, he made a gutsy stretch run, overtaking Two Phil’s to his inside and winning by a length. Mage, who didn’t race as a two-year-old, ran 1 1/4 miles […]

Wild On Ice Springs 35-1 Upset In Sunland Park Derby

Frank Sumpter’s homebred Wild On Ice outdueled a determined late challenger and got clear in the closing strides to collect the $600,000 Sunland Derby (G3) as the longest shot in the field Sunday at Sunland Park in New Mexico. Sent off at 35-1 odds and ridden by veteran Ken Tohill, Wild On Ice tracked from third through six furlongs, then went six wide through the second turn before snatching the lead in upper stretch. He shook off a strong bid from Low Expectations and powered across the finish line 1 1/4 lengths clear of that rival, who was the second-longest […]

Charge It returns a winner at Gulfstream Park

Charge It made a much-anticipated and triumphant return from a seven-month layoff Sunday at Gulfstream Park, scoring an always-in-control 1 1/2-length triumph in the featured $87,000 optional-claiming allowance. Sidelined since capturing the July 2 Dwyer (G3) at Belmont Park by a dazzling 23 lengths, Charge It stalked a solid early pace before moving to the lead leaving the far turn and continuing on to a comfortable decision over late-rallying Vittorio. “You never take anything for granted in this game. The horse was training super. We felt like we had him ready off the layoff,” Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said. […]

Rich Strike returns energetic from Monday’s Belmont gallop

RED TR-Racing’s Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike shortened up to 1 1/4 miles for his daily exercise on Monday and left the track wanting to do more in his daily gallop for Saturday’s $1.5 million Belmont Stakes. Rich Strike had his typical morning routine, schooling through Belmont’s paddock before walking through the tunnel and onto the fast main track with regular exercise rider Gabriel Lagunes aboard. Trainer Eric Reed stated he was pleased with the gallop, but knew Rich Strike needed to gallop farther when he had a spirited exit from the main track. Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike won’t run Preakness

Kentucky Derby long-shot winner Rich Strike will not race in the Preakness Stakes on May 21. Owner Rick Dawson said in a statement: “Our original plan for Rich Strike was contingent on the KY Derby, should we not run in the Derby we would point toward the Preakness, should we run in the Derby, subject to the race outcome & the condition of our horse, we would give him more recovery time & rest and run in the Belmont, or another race and stay on course to run with 5 or 6 weeks rest between races.” Rich Strike entered the […]

Medina Spirit stripped of Kentucky Derby victory; trainer Baffert suspended 90 days

Medina Spirit was stripped of the triumph in last year’s Kentucky Derby and Mandaloun was declared the winner after a ruling by state racing stewards on Monday. The since-deceased Medina Spirit tested positive after the race last May for a steroid, betamethasone, that is legal in Kentucky but banned on race day. Medina Spirit finished half a length ahead of Mandaloun in the race, giving trainer Bob Baffert what was then his seventh Kentucky Derby title. Baffert was subsequently banned for two years by Churchill Downs following the positive test. Looking for the best online betting site and Live betting? […]
