Houston Astros finish off Chicago White Sox to reach 5th straight ALCS as Tony La Russa fumes over ‘intentional’ Jose Abreu plunking

The Houston Astros advanced to their fifth consecutive American League Championship Series on Tuesday by defeating the Chicago White Sox 10-1 in Game 4 of their best-of-five division series matchup. The Astros are the third team ever to appear in five consecutive league championship series, and first to do so since the Atlanta Braves reached eight straight from 1991 to 1999. For the second time in five days, Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. held the White Sox’s offense in check, giving up just a solo home run, to designated hitter Gavin Sheets, in the second inning. But McCullers left the game after four innings due to right forearm tightness. His […]

Cody Bellinger evokes 2019 MVP prowess with 2-run double in Dodgers’ Game 2 win

For a brief, fleeting moment — the amount of time it took Giants reliever Dominic Leone’s sixth-inning fastball to travel from his hand to the plate — Cody Bellinger looked like the guy who was the 2019 National League MVP. Bellinger was balanced and quick, two elements of successful hitting that have eluded him all season. The result was a two-run double to left-center that put the Dodgers ahead 4-1 and set the stage for what became a 9-2 victory in Game 2 of the National League Division Series on Saturday. Bellinger hit .165 with a .542 OPS this season, unfathomably bad numbers for a player who […]

San Diego Padres fire Jayce Tingler after falling short of big goals

The San Diego Padres have fired Jayce Tingler, who presided over the biggest collapse in franchise history just a season after finishing second in voting for National League Manager of the Year. President of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller announced the move Wednesday, three days after the Padres finished 79-83 and in third place in the NL West, 28 games behind the San Francisco Giants. Tingler will be given the chance to stay in the organization. “Jayce accomplished a great deal in his two seasons with the Padres, leading our team through an unprecedented pandemic and into the postseason for the […]

Right-hander Antonio Senzatela and first baseman C.J. Cron reached agreement on multiyear contracts with the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Senzatela agreed to a five-year deal that ties the right-handed control artist to the organization through at least 2026 and Cron agreed to a two-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed but, sources told ESPN that Senzatela’s deal is worth $50.5 million. The deal involves a $14 million club option for 2027 and gives the Rockies four potential free-agent seasons, the sources said. The cost is significant: $7.25 million for each of the next two seasons and $12 million each for the 2024-26 seasons. Cron’s deal is […]

Judge HRs twice, Yankees beat Jays 6-2 to extend WC lead

Aaron Judge hit two of New York’s five home runs and the Yankees extended their AL wild-card lead by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2 Thursday night. Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo also connected off Blue Jays starter Robbie Ray, and Brett Gardner added a solo homer as New York (91-68) slimmed its magic number to clinch a postseason spot to two. The Yankees are two games ahead of Boston and idle Seattle, both 89-70, after the Red Sox lost to last-place Baltimore 6-2 earlier Thursday. Toronto trails New York by three games. New York has won eight of nine but could be in better shape entering a season-ending […]

Brewers on brink of NL Central title after Burnes beats Mets

Corbin Burnes pitched seven wonderful innings to win his ninth consecutive decision and the Milwaukee Brewers moved to the brink of clinching the NL Central title with a 2-1 triumph over the New York Mets on Saturday night. The Brewers, already assured a fourth consecutive playoff berth, can wrap up the division crown Sunday with a victory at home in the series finale versus the Mets or a Cardinals loss to the Cubs in Chicago. Milwaukee won its second straight following a five-game skid, including a four-game sweep at home by the second-place Cardinals, who have won a team-record 15 in a row. “I think […]

Gilbert sharp as Diamondbacks hurt Mariners again in 5-4 win

Tyler Gilbert gave up two hits in another sharp outing, Ketel Marte homered and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Sunday. Arizona did more damage to the Mariners’ AL wild-card hopes with its second consecutive win, taking the series from a team that was surging just two days ago. Seattle is now three games behind Boston for the second wild-card spot with the Red Sox coming to town Monday for a three-game series. It was the first road series victory for the Diamondbacks since April 23-25 when they took two of three from Atlanta. Asked if he remembered the last road series win, David Peralta paused […]

Lowe helps power Rangers sweep past Diamondbacks 8-5

Nathaniel Lowe didn’t want to steal the thunder from his brother Josh’s big day. Lowe had three hits and missed a cycle by a home run as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-5 Wednesday to match a season high with their fourth consecutive win. The big news in the Lowe family was the major league debut of younger brother Josh with Nathaniel’s former team, the Tampa Bay Rays. He was in the Rays’ starting lineup, batting eighth and playing right field, versus the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Wednesday night. Nathaniel had a shot at the cycle in the ninth but grounded out. “I […]

Goldschmidt 2 HRs, scores walk-off run, Cards beat Tigers

Paul Goldschmidt homered twice and scored the game-ending run on Lars Nootbaar’s single in the 10th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Wednesday. Goldschmidt was intentionally walked to open the 10th and executed a one-out double steal with automatic runner Tommy Edman.  Nolan Arenado was intentionally walked. After a fielder’s choice for the second out, Nootbaar lined a single to right field off Michael Fulmer (5-6) and St. Louis improved to 11-5 in extra innings. It was the first walk-off hit in Nootbaar’s big league career. “It’s pretty unbelievable honestly,” he said. “I always wanted to know what it felt like, but now […]

Belt homers twice for career-best 19, Giants drub Mets 8-0

Brandon Belt hit two of San Francisco’s four home runs to push his career-best total to 19, rookie Sammy Long pitched into the sixth inning and the Giants trounced the slumping New York Mets 8-0 Tuesday night. After using late-game homers to steal consecutive triumphs from Oakland on Saturday and Sunday, San Francisco powered up early at Citi Field. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski also connected in the first four innings as the Giants jumped to a 7-0 advantage against rookie Tylor Megill (1-3). The lone concern for the Giants: seven-time All-Star catcher Buster Posey was removed with right knee discomfort in the fifth, one inning after being visited behind the […]
