Mark Reynolds says he’s retiring after 13 year career

Slugger Mark Reynolds is retiring after hitting 298 homers over 13 campaigns with eight teams. The 36-year-old made the announcement Thursday on SiriusXM Radio. When the free agent was asked whether he still was pursuing a new team, Reynolds said he has “moved beyond that, I’ve retired.” He added that he’s enjoying spending time with his family and it was time for him “to find something else to do.” Reynolds was a prime example of the rise of all-or-nothing masher. His best years came with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He hit .260 in 2009 and set a career high with 44 […]

Players, Managers considering option of MLB’s all-Arizona idea

Boston’s Chris Sale, out for the season following Tommy John surgery, thought about the prospect of his teammates sequestering in the Phoenix area for an extended period if Major League Baseball and its players adopt an all-Arizona start to the campaign. “I don’t know if I could look at my kids just through a screen for four or five months. Same thing goes with my wife,” the pitcher stated Tuesday. “That’s a long time. But people have done it in harsh scenarios, I guess. I think there’s a lot of figuring out to do.” Putting all 30 teams in the […]

Dodgers’ Justin Turner proposes HR derby to end extra-inning games

Justin Turner has an idea on how to rid baseball of endless extra-inning games.  The Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman said he wants to push MLB to decide extra-inning games via home run derby. “This is my opportunity to push for a home run derby in extra innings,” Turner told Access Sportsnet Dodgers. “Instead of playing 17 innings, you get one extra inning, you play the 10th inning, and [if] no one scores, then you go to a home run derby. You take each team’s three best hitters and you give them all five outs, and see who hits the […]

AJ Hinch, Jeff Luhnow suspension fulfilled in 2020 even if MLB season canceled

Even if the 2020 MLB season is shortened or canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, it reportedly wouldn’t affect the suspension status of former Houston Astros manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow. Both Hinch and Luhnow were suspended for one year by MLB because of their roles in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal. And according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, sources have reported that they will get credit for serving their one-year suspensions even if the 2020 season doesn’t happen. Shortly after MLB announced their suspensions, Hinch and Luhnow were fired by the Astros. If Olney’s report is accurate, it […]

Red Sox’s Chris Sale to undergo Tommy John surgery

The elbow issue that has dogged Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale since last season has led to the worst case scenario. On Thursday the Red Sox announced Sale will undergo Tommy John surgery. He will miss the entire 2020 season and likely the start of the 2021 season as well. No surgery date has been announced. “Needless to say, this is a tough thing for Chris and a tough thing for all of us here with the Red Sox,” chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom told reporters, including the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier. Sale, 31 next week, was limited to […]

Nationals release reliever Hunter Strickland

Major League Baseball, like many sports leagues around the world, has been shut down indefinitely due to the growing threat that is the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Spring Training has been suspended and Opening Day will be pushed back at least two weeks, though that remains subject to change. On Friday, MLB and the MLBPA informed teams that players have three options during the shutdown: stay at their team’s spring training facility, return to their offseason homes, or return to their team’s home city. MLB and the MLBPA are still working through the logistics of the shutdown, including a potential roster […]

Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun undergoes surgery to repair broken jaw

Texas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun had surgery to repair his broken jaw Monday, a day after being hit in the face by a fastball. Surgeons were prepared to wire Calhoun’s jaw shut but instead installed a plate to steady the fracture, which should make for a faster recovery.  Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Calhoun would be released from the hospital this week, possibly Tuesday, and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, at which time Texas may get a better idea of his timetable for a return. Daniels said doctors had not yet determined if Calhoun had a concussion. While […]

Rangers´ Corey Kluber pitches for fist time since arm broken

Corey Kluber faced major league hitters for the first time in 10 months — in a new uniform, no less — and said he didn’t feel any different. “Maybe a little bit beforehand,” the Texas Rangers right-hander said Sunday after throwing three innings versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. “But once you get out there and start stretching, playing catch, getting loose in the bullpen, all that stuff kinda goes away. “It just turns into another start, whether it’s the regular season or spring training. That’s kind of how everything usually goes for me.” It was Kluber’s first time facing a […]

Luis Severino has Tommy John surgery, out for 2020 season

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino underwent Tommy John surgery on Thursday, the Yankees revealed. His 2020 season is over before it even started. The Yankees added that Severino had an existing bone chip removed from his elbow during the procedure. GM Brian Cashman announced earlier this spring that Severino, who was limited to three regular-season appearances in 2019, had dealt with forearm soreness dating back to October, when he made a pair of postseason starts for the Yankees. The team shut down Severino last week after he went through his normal throwing program to start spring training. “[Severino] has acknowledged and agreed […]

Yankees shut down Luis Severino with forearm soreness

New York Yankees starter Luis Severino has been shut down with soreness in his right forearm. Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Thursday that the right-hander will see Dr. Chris Ahmad, the team’s physician, Friday. However, GM Brian Cashman told reporters Severino won’t see the team doctor, adding that he’s uncertain if this is a short or long-term issue. Boone noted Severino has a loose body in his pitching elbow and that the soreness dates back to his last playoff start versus the Houston Astros on Oct. 15. Last year was a mess for Severino. After heading into the season with high expectations, he was immediately shut down in spring […]
