The Texas Rangers agreed to a deal with veteran third baseman Todd Frazier, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Evan Grant. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Frazier will get $5 million guaranteed. Over the last three seasons, Frazier has an OPS+ of 102, and for his career he has a mark of 106. Over that span, the right-handed slugger has averaged 29 home runs per 162 games played. He could potentially get a base salary of $4 million in 2021 which could escalate to $5 million depending on how many games he finished on the mound. Nationals to bring back infielder Asdrubal Cabrera

The Nationals have agreed to terms with infielder Asdrubal Cabrera on a one-year, $2.5 million deal, per multiple reports.  Cabrera, 34, won a ring with the Nationals last season. He was signed by the Rangers in January but then released on August 3. Three days later, the Nationals signed him as a free agent. In 38 games down the stretch, Cabrera slashed .323/.404/.565 with six homers and 40 RBI while walking more times than he struck out. He wasn’t quite as productive in the postseason, hitting .233/.250/.267.  Cabrera can handle second or third base adequately, in theory, but he’s lacking range at this point in his […]

Twins bolster rotation with veterans Rich Hill, Homer Bailey

The Minnesota Twins added two veteran arms to their starting rotation, signing free agents Rich Hill and Homer Bailey to one-year deals, the team announced Tuesday. Sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan that Bailey’s deal is for $7 million, while Hill starts with a $3 million deal that could reach $12.5 million with incentives. Hill, who turns 40 on March 11, is not expected back until midseason after having what is called primary repair surgery, which has a six months recovery time. If he returns in time to make 15 starts or throw 75 innings, Hil’s salary will jump to $12.5 million, a source told […]

Edwin Encarnacion signs with White Sox

Encarnacion reportedly agreed on Wednesday to a free-agent contract with Chicago for one year and $12 million. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman first reported that the deal was close before others reported that the deal was completed. The soon-to-be 37-year-old is one of the most accomplished power hitters of the past decade. Over the last eight campaings, he’s led MLB in total homers and RBIs, hitting no less than 32 long balls in each year during that span and reaching the 100-RBI mark six times.  The White Sox will be his fifth club in the last four years. After more than seven seasons — […]

Cardinals sign top South Korean pitcher Kwang Hyun Kim

The St. Louis Cardinals searched all over the world, looking for the right kind of left-handed pitcher. They think they’ve found him in Kwang Hyun Kim. The NL Central champions and the 31-year-old South Korean finalized an $8 million, two-year contract, a deal that would pay him $10 million over the two years if he pitches regularly. Through an interpreter, Kim said Tuesday he had followed the Cardinals and their success while growing up and hoped someday to play for St. Louis. At his Busch Stadium news conference, Kim held up a small sign that read “Hello STL.” He gets […]

Stephen Stasburg returns to Nationals

World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg on Monday agreed to terms with the Washington Nationals on a seven-year, $245 million contract, according to sources, six weeks after opting out of the final four years of his contract with the Nationals. There are no opt-outs or options in the contract, a source said. Some of the contract money is deferred. Gauged before the deferrals are assessed, the contract carries the highest average annual value — $35 million — for a pitcher and tops the prior record for total value for a pitcher — David Price’s $217 million — by $28 million. Those records are expected to be short-lived, as Gerrit […]

Rangers acquire Cy Young winner Corey Kluber from Indians

Corey Kluber led by example and excellence in Cleveland. The Texas Rangers are hoping he can do the same for them. The Indians traded the two-time Cy Young Award winner – and their unquestioned ace – over the past six seasons to the Rangers on Sunday, a blockbuster deal that could dramatically change both teams. In exchange for the 33-year-old Kluber, Cleveland received outfielder Delino DeShields and pitching prospect Emmanuel Clase, a hard-throwing 21-year-old with huge potential. The stoic and steady Kluber has been one of baseball’s most dominant pitchers since 2014, when he went 18-9 and got his first Cy Young. He got […]

Royals sign Trevor Rosenthal to minor league deal

The Royals have signed hard-throwing right-hander Trevor Rosenthal to a minor league deal, per Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star. The deal will pay the 29-year-old $2MM if he makes the team with an additional $2.25MM in performance bonuses, per Worthy. Additionally, Rosenthal will be a non-roster invite to MLB spring training. Rosenthal famously endured one of the more disappointing 2019 seasons league-wide after signing for $8MM guaranteed with the eventual World Champion Washington Nationals. That the Nats had to come from so far behind in the standings was at least partially attributable to the complete backfiring of their offseason bullpen makeover, which […]
