Skubal strikes out 9, Tigers hand Giants season-worst 6th consecutive loss, 5-1

Tarik Skubal struck out nine while recording his first victory in more than a year and the Detroit Tigers handed the San Francisco Giants their season-worst sixth consecutive loss, 5-1, on Monday. Skubal (1-1) held the Giants scoreless on two hits in five innings in a match that was a makeup of an April 16 rainout. His previous victory came versus Oakland on July 21 last season. He underwent flexor tendon surgery in August. Skubal had pitched just four innings in each of his first three starts. He gave up seven runs to Kansas City in his last outing. “I felt like I was in […]

Aaron Judge faces live pitching for 1st time since toe injury

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge faced live pitching on Sunday for the first time since tearing a ligament in his right toe on June 3. In a simulated match versus Jonathan Loaisiga, who is rehabbing from right elbow surgery, Judge saw 16 pitches. He did not put any balls in play but fouled off four pitches, including one to the upper deck behind home plate. “To be able to take pitches where your swing says no, those are tests that he’s got to go through in working his way back,” manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees concluded a three-game series with […]

Dodgers place Jake Marisnick on 10-day injured list

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed newly signed outfielder Jake Marisnick on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Marisnick recorded a single before exiting Tuesday’s 10-3 triumph at Baltimore with a left hamstring strain. Including four matches with the Dodgers, Marisnick is batting .237 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 46 games with the Dodgers, Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers this campaign. The Dodgers made headlines last week when they signed Marisnick, a member of the 2017 Houston Astros team that defeated Los Angeles in the World Series but later was punished by Major League Baseball after an investigation confirmed they cheated by using a camera-based sign-stealing system. Ohtani still on track to start for Angels vs. Pirates Friday

Shohei Ohtani, dealing with a troublesome finger during his past three trips to the pitcher’s mound, is still on track to make his next programmed start Friday versus the Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin stated prior to Monday’s series opener versus the New York Yankees. Ohtani first pitched through a cracked nail in his right middle finger June 27, which developed into a blister when he took the mound July 4. The additional rest afforded by the All-Star break didn’t completely solve the issue; Ohtani was still nursing the cracked fingernail and blister while being charged with five runs (four earned) […]

Schwarber hits 25th homer and winning sacrifice fly in 12th as Phillies beat Padres 7-6

Kyle Schwarber hit his 25th home run and ended the match with a 12th-inning sacrifice fly, giving the Philadelphia Phillies a 7-6 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday. The defending NL champions won three games in a row over the Padres on the heels of a three-game losing skid, including a series-opening loss to San Diego to start the second half. The Padres, who lost in the NLCS to the Phillies last fall, dropped to 44-50, including 19-27 on the road. Philadelphia (51-42) overcame a 3-0 deficit, then wasted a 5-3 lead when pinch-hitter Fernando Tatis Jr. had a two-run single in the eighth […]

Athletics have begun Las Vegas relocation process

The Athletics, poised to move out of Oakland and into Las Vegas, have “begun to submit information related to their relocation application,” Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday, adding that the application is “not complete at this point.” About a month ago, the Nevada State Legislature approved a $380 million bill that would help fund a proposed 30,000-seat, $1.5 billion retractable-roof ballpark on the Tropicana hotel site along the Vegas strip. The A’s, based in Oakland since 1968, hope to break ground next year and open the venue in time for the 2028 season. Their lease at the Oakland […]

Cardinals star Nolan Arenado prepared for trade possibility

St. Louis Cardinals All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado knows that despite his superstar status, he could be on the chopping block just like anyone else as the trade deadline approaches. “It is a business, right?” Arenado said. “I’ve been traded once. I think that shocked a lot of people at that time,” he added. “I guess it doesn’t surprise me anymore what happens in this game.” Arenado made the comments from the All-Star festivities in Seattle, where he is the lone Cardinals player in this year’s Midsummer Classic. Rangers get closer Aroldis Chapman in trade with Royals

The Texas Rangers, who have emerged as one of the most dominant teams in the majors this campaign, pulled off the first major trade of the summer on Friday, snagging perennial All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman from the Kansas City Royals. Cole Ragans, a 25-year-old starting pitcher, and Roni Cabrera, a 17-year-old outfielder, were acquired from the Royals in exchange. Chapman, a free agent at season’s end, will join fellow lefty Will Smith and right-hander Josh Sborz in the back end of the Rangers’ bullpen, forming a devastating mix late in matches. The Rangers’ bullpen ranks 24th in the majors in ERA, but Smith and Sborz have combined for […]

Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán throws 1st perfect game since 2012. It’s the 24th in MLB history

Since arriving in the big leagues six years ago, Domingo Germán has been anything but perfect. Until now. The New York Yankees right-hander pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history Wednesday night, retiring every Oakland batter in an 11-0 triumph over the Athletics. It was the first perfect game since Seattle Mariners ace Félix Hernández threw one versus the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 15, 2012. There were three that season — but none since until Germán finished off the first no-hitter in the majors this year. He joined Don Larsen (1956), David Wells (1998) and David Cone (1999) as Yankees to pitch perfect […]

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge has torn ligament in toe

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said Saturday he has a torn ligament in his right big toe and is experiencing pain when he walks. When the Yankees placed Judge on the injured list June 6, the team said he was dealing with a contusion and a sprained ligament in his right big toe. There remains no timetable for the return of the reigning American League MVP. “I’ve got to knock out the rehab stuff,” Judge said. “I’ve had different injuries over the years where it’s going to take a while. It’s not going to be perfect here in a couple of weeks. […]
