Astros’ Jose Altuve resumes baseball activities, return not set

Jose Altuve restarted some baseball activities this week, but there still isn’t a timetable for when Houston’s star second baseman will return to the team. Altuve fractured his right thumb in the World Baseball Classic and had surgery to repair the injury March 22. After his surgery, Astros general manager Dana Brown stated he would be out at least eight weeks. It has been six weeks so far, and while Altuve was cleared to return to baseball activities this week — including throwing, running and fielding — he hasn’t been cleared to swing. “I think right now it’s hard to tell,” […]

Padres rally for 2-game Mexican sweep, beat Giants 6-4

After a game that felt like a home run derby, Matt Carpenter expected Sunday could be more of the same. It was not. Carpenter capped an eighth-inning rally with a tiebreaking, two-run double off the glove of diving centerfielder Mike Yastrzemski, and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 6-4 for a two-game sweep of Major League Baseball’s first regular-season series in Mexico City. A day after winning an 11-home run thriller 16-11, the Padres overcame a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth and three in the eighth. “After last night´s game you go to bed thinking that this one was going […]

After long wait, Pirates’ Drew Maggi gets call to the majors

Drew Maggi sat at a hotel across the Allegheny River from PNC Park on Saturday night. The 33-year-old infielder arrived in Pittsburgh around 7 p.m., having just been called up to the Pittsburgh Pirates from Double-A Altoona. Maggi, looking to possibly make his major league debut, reminisced as he started out at the ballpark. “A lot of staring at the roof,” Maggi stated Sunday morning. “Just kind of a lot of thought, a lot of thinking about different moments, how crazy it is. From my hotel room, I can see the stadium. A lot of just sitting in the chair, looking out, just being […]

Judge robs Ohtani, hits 2-run HR as Yanks edge Angels in 10

A night after Shohei Ohtani showed off his MVP tools, Aaron Judge did him one better at Yankee Stadium. Judge robbed Ohtani of a homer with a juggling catch just before hitting a two-run shot, and the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 Wednesday on Gleyber Torres’ sacrifice fly in the 10th inning. Judge also saved the go-ahead run with a diving grab in the eighth, and the Yankees evened this star-studded series after Ohtani went deep in the opener. “You want to play against the best,” Judge said. “That’s what it’s all about.” Gio Urshela tied it 2-all for the Angels in the eighth with a two-out […]

Mets star closer Edwin Diaz says he hopes to return this season

New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz has not ruled out returning before the end of the campaign, saying his injured knee is progressing well. Diaz, speaking to the media for the first time since tearing his right patellar tendon while celebrating at the World Baseball Classic, said Wednesday that his knee “is doing right” and that his recovery is going “in a good direction.” While the typical recovery timeline for his injury is around eight months, Diaz offered a more optimistic prognosis. “I might throw this season,” he said. “As of right now, my knee is doing right. [The doctors] are really happy, […]

Max Muncy hits 2 HRs for 7 RBIs to power Dodgers past Giants

The way his season started in the batter’s box, Max Muncy realized he had to find a rhythm again. He had abandoned the step-back move with his left leg in a remake of his mechanics. But, suddenly, he was thinking too much, chasing pitches and struggling to correctly recognize what pitchers were throwing his way. Anxiety hit hard as the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger started 1-for-16, then 4-for-33 as he studied film and made tweaks — until everything finally felt right again Monday night. And the tried-and-true move with his left leg, he brought that back, too. Muncy hit a grand slam and a […]

Pirates finish sweep of Red Sox behind Keller and Santana

Mitch Keller struck out seven, Carlos Santana homered and Bryan Reynolds knocked in his seventh run of the season as the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game sweep of the Red Sox with a 4-1 victory Wednesday. Ke’Bryan Hayes drove in a run with a perfectly-placed bunt in the sixth and Santana added an RBI double during a two-run seventh that put the Pirates up 4-0. It was the Pirates’ first road sweep of an American League adversary since Pittsburgh took three at Detroit in 2018. “That’s a good Red Sox team and they score a bunch of runs. I was really proud of our pitchers and how […]

Andres Gimenez, Cleveland Guardians reach extension

Second baseman Andrés Giménez and the Cleveland Guardians are in agreement on a seven-year $106.5 million contract extension that has a team option for 2031, sources told ESPN. This locks up another core member of the club that has finished first or second in the American League Central for the last seven seasons. Giménez, 24, had a breakout 2022 in which he made his first All-Star team, aquired a Gold Glove and finished behind only Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani in the AL with 7.4 Wins Above Replacement. Acquired as part of the blockbuster deal that sent All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor to the New York Mets in January 2021, Giménez […]

The Philadelphia Phillies and ace pitcher Aaron Nola have broken off talks on a contract extension, tabling the negotiations until after the season. We want to win, so just focused on having a good season and having fun with these guys. “We definitely tried to get it done, but it just didn’t work […]
