Marlins RHP Eury Perez to have Tommy John surgery

Miami Marlins right-hander Eury Perez will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the 2024 season, the team revealed Thursday. The decision came after Perez visited Dr. Keith Meister for the second time in approximately two weeks. He will have the procedure on his right elbow on Monday. “I know Eury is really frustrated,” Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix said. “He’s really disappointed, but he also understands that this is a minor setback in what’s going to be a really long career.” Perez initially was diagnosed with mild elbow inflammation, with surgery not being recommended at that point. He began playing catch […]

Leverkusen rout Dusseldorf, head to cup final

Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen overwhelmed second division club Fortuna Dusseldorf 4-0 on Wednesday to reach the DFB Pokal final and stretch their undefeated run to 40 matches across all competitions this season. First-half goals from Jeremie Frimpong, Amine Adli and Florian Wirtz put the game to bed as Dusseldorf struggled to cope with the hosts’ pace. Germany international Wirtz added a fourth with a penalty on the hour to give Xabi Alonso’s team another shot at winning a major trophy for the first time in 31 years. Leverkusen will face Kaiserslautern, who ousted third division Saarbrucken 2-0 on Tuesday, in the final on May 25. Looking for the […]

Celtics clinch NBA’s best record with runaway win against OKC

Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault likened the Celtics’ performance this season to that of a Ferrari. Boston’s latest triumph over the Thunder earned it yet another luxury with the playoffs fast approaching. Kristaps Porzingis had 27 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks, helping the Celtics power past the Thunder 135-100 on Wednesday night to secure the best record in the NBA and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. Boston, which won its 11th consecutive home match, improved to 60-16 on the season to notch its 14th 60-win season in franchise history. The only other franchise with at least 10 such seasons is the Lakers, who have 11, […]

Phillies slugger Bryce Harper hits 3 homers for first hits of season

Bryce Harper’s first hit of the season was a big one. Same for his second. And his third. Harper homered in all three of his at-bats for Philadelphia during Tuesday night’s 9-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The two-time NL MVP went 0 for 11 while playing in three of the Phillies’ first four games. The 31-year-old Harper drove a 1-2 cut fastball from Graham Ashcraft deep to center in the first inning. The 420-foot solo shot had an exit velocity of 107.7 mph. He came up again in the fourth and hit another solo shot to right. The 367-foot homer on the […]

Houston Astros’ Ronel Blanco no-hits Toronto Blue Jays

Ronel Blanco, making his first start of the season, baffled the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night, pitching a no-hitter in the Houston Astros’ 10-0 victory. Blanco, coming off a modest 2-1 season in which he concluded with a 4.50 ERA, ignited an Astros club that was coming off a four-game sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees, giving Houston its first victory of the season and Major League Baseball its first no-hitter of the year. He threw 105 pitches, posting seven strikeouts along the way, with just two walks. When Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded out to end it, Blanco smiled broadly before raising his […]

Saul strike earns Atletico Madrid hard-fought win at Villarreal

Substitute Saúl Ñíguez scored a late winner to give Atletico Madrid a hard-fought 2-1 triumph at Villarreal on Monday, as Diego Simeone’s side climbed back into LaLiga’s top four with eight matches left in the season. It was a much needed victory for Atletico after two consecutive losses and two wins in their last seven league matches had left them in danger of missing out on a Champions League spot next season. They were facing an in-form Villarreal side, who were on a four-game winning streak and undefeated in their last nine league matches, a run that earned Marcelino Garcia LaLiga’s Coach of Month award in […]

Danielle Collins wins first Miami Open as career nears end

Danielle Collins had the perfect send-off at her final Miami Open, defeating Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday to capture the title in her home state before an adoring crowd that included Andre Agassi and Martina Navratilova. The 30-year-old Collins announced at the Australian Open that this season would be her last because she’s suffering from endometriosis, an ailment that affects the uterus. On her fourth match point, Collins hit a backhand crosscourt winner, then bent over for 10 seconds without moving. “That game took a lot out of me and Elena was pushing me all around the court,” Collins said. “At the […]

Suns suffer ‘unacceptable’ loss vs. Victor Wembanyama-less Spurs

Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal didn’t mince words on Monday night following a disappointing performance. The Suns, two days removed from defeating the San Antonio Spurs by 25, played the same team in the same arena, and this time the Spurs were missing star rookie Victor Wembanyama. Yet the Spurs flipped the script with a 104-102 triumph. “It’s disappointment,” Beal told reporters after the game. “We came in here and laid an egg. We thought it was going to be easy with no Wemby. Just got our ass kicked. They came out aggressive, just like Coach told us they would, and we didn’t respond. Well, we did, but […]

Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu to start season on IL with bruised foot

New York Yankees leadoff hitter DJ LeMahieu will start the season on the injured list due to a bruised right foot, the latest injury setback for the former batting champion. The third baseman has been sidelined since fouling a ball off the foot on March 16. He is expected to miss at least the seven-game trip that starts Thursday at Houston. “It’s a little bit slow go on the recovery side,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman stated Monday. “He banged it up pretty good.” An MRI and CT scan last week were both negative. Cashman stated there will be a follow-up MRI this […]

Blake Snell’s prolonged free agency has ended. Snell received a $17 million signing bonus and is set to make $15 million this season and $30 million next season, half of which will be deferred until 2027.
