Renault-owned Alpine revealed another managerial shake-up on Monday with three new bosses replacing technical director Matt Harman and aerodynamics head Dirk de Beer, who have left the Formula One team after a dismal start to the season. The three new technical directors are Joe Burnell for engineering, David Wheater for aerodynamics and Ciaron Pilbeam for performance. All three will report to team principal Bruno Famin, who took over from the departed Otmar Szafnauer as interim boss last August and now has the permanent position. In the space […]

Athletic Club beat Atletico Madrid to reach Copa del Rey final

Brothers Inaki and Nico Williams scored to help Athletic Bilbao secure a 3-0 semi-final victory over Atletico Madrid on Thursday and a 4-0 aggregate victory that sent the Basque side into their third Copa de Rey final in the last five years. Ernesto Valverde’s team punished the visitors with clinical counter-attacks, starting when Inaki Williams struck in the 13th minute with a superb volley from his brother’s cross. Inaki returned the favor to his younger sibling in the 42nd minute, setting up Nico for a simple close-range finish. “Our connection is real and it’s working very well, we understand each other,” Nico Williams told […]

Pirates, Mitch Keller agree to five-year extension

Right-hander Mitch Keller and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a five-year, $77 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN, locking up another young core player as the team continues to try to return to the postseason for the first time in nearly a decade. The deal, which starts this year and ends after the 2028 season, will pay Keller $7.5 million in 2024 — more than $2 million above where he had settled with the team in arbitration, according to sources. In what would’ve been his final year of arbitration in 2025, Keller will receive $15 million. For the three free agent years […]

Red Bull launch ‘brave’ and ‘innovative’ RB20 for 2024 season

Red Bull says it has “pushed the boundaries” with the design of its new Formula One car, the RB20, as it prepares to defend its position as the dominant force in Formula One for a third year running. The reigning champions revealed their new car on Thursday, six days ahead of pre-season testing, although much of the focus at the launch event was diverted by an ongoing internal investigation into team principal Christian Horner. Red Bull design chief Adrian Newey insisted the new car is an evolution of last year’s RB19, but a number of visual design variations — including a […]

Exiting A’s to meet with Oakland about interim home

In an effort to find a temporary home in advance of a move to Las Vegas in 2028, the Oakland Athletics are expected to meet with Oakland city officials Thursday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday. The team’s lease at the Oakland Coliseum is set to expire at the end of 2024, leaving it unclear where it will play for three seasons in advance of a move to Nevada. While talks between the team and the city of Oakland have occurred at various intervals, Thursday’s meeting is considered to be a more “formal” affair. Pochettino hails ‘priceless’ Gallagher after Chelsea comeback win

Mauricio Pochettino stated match-winner Conor Gallagher is “priceless” to Chelsea after his two goals helped them to a 3-1 victory at Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Monday evening. Chelsea went into the break 1-0 down after Jefferson Lerma’s wondergoal in the first half, but Gallagher scored just a minute into the second half and then a 91st minute winner to break Palace’s resolve. Enzo Fernández added a third in the 94th minute of the match as Chelsea came away from Selhurst Park with three points. Gallagher’s first saw him finish well off a Malo Gusto cross, while for the second he slotted home neatly from the edge of the box […]

Leverkusen crush Bayern to go 5 points clear in Bundesliga

Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen outplayed champions Bayern Munich for a 3-0 triumph on Saturday that sent them five points clear at the top of the league and put them firmly in charge of the title race. Goals from Josip Stanisic, Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong made sure of the three points as Leverkusen, who have never earn a Bundesliga title, and stretched their undefeated run to 31 matches across all competitions this season. Bayern, chasing a 12th consecutive league crown, were nowhere to be seen and managed only a single shot on target over the 90 minutes. Xabi Alonso’s team, who also twice hit the woodwork, are now on 55 […]

Surprised Bottas backs Hamilton to succeed at Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton’s former Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas has stated he expects the seven-time Formula One world champion to be a good fit for Ferrari when the British driver moves to the Italian team next year. The switch was announced last week after Hamilton, 39, exercised a break clause in his new contract and signed for the sport’s oldest, historically most successful and most glamorous team on a multiyear deal from the start of the 2025 season. “I never thought it would happen,” Bottas said at a livery launch in London for his Sauber-run Stake F1 team on Monday night. “I thought in my mind he would stay at Mercedes, but […]

Red Bull’s junior Formula One team, formerly known as Toro Rosso and then AlphaTauri, has been renamed Visa Cash App RB ahead of the 2024 season, the team revealed on Wednesday.
