Mighty Heart, 1-eyed longshot, takes $1-million Queen’s Plate

Daisuke Fukumoto and Mighty Heart ran away with the $1-million Queen’s Plate on Saturday. Fukumoto took his one-eyed mount to the lead from the start, then surged to a stunning 7 1/2-length triumph in the opening leg of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown at Woodbine Racetrack. Mighty Heart, a 13/1 longshot, lost an eye in a paddock accident with his mother as a foal. His winning time of 2:01.98 was the second-fastest since 1957 when the Plate was first run at the new Woodbine at its current distance. That effort was second only to Izvestia (2:01 4/5 in 1990). But […]

Authentic outduels Tiz the Law in Derby upset

Authentic dueled with Tiz the Law in the final turn and upset the heavy favorite to conquest the 146th Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Ridden by John Velazquez, Authentic led from start to finish and won by 1¼ lengths, giving trainer Bob Baffert his record-tying sixth Derby champion. Authentic covered 1¼ mile in 2:00.61, the seventh-fastest time ever in the Derby, and paid $18.80 to win. He is the first wire-to-wire Derby winner since 2002, when War Emblem won for Baffert. Baffert tied Ben Jones for the most wins by a trainer. Along with Authentic and War Emblem, […]

Kentucky Derby: Art Collector out with minor foot ailment

Art Collector, the likely second wagering option Saturday in the 146th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, is out after suffering a minor foot ailment. The bombshell of bad news spread quickly Tuesday morning at Churchill and beyond, shortly after Art Collector did not appear on the track. A subsequent Churchill release stated trainer Tommy Drury reported “the colt nicked the bulb of his left front heel with a hind hoof while galloping Monday at Churchill” and that because of strict medication rules, the horse could not be treated with an anti-inflammatory so close to the race. Art Collector, bred and […]

Texas Breeder Hangs His Dreams on Whiskey Echo

Whether due to luck or divine intervention, graded-placed winner Whiskey Echo seemed destined to become the first stallion Glynn Parent Jr. would stand at his 40-acre farm southwest of Houston. Parent had just started building a modest broodmare band and, after going through a breeding season of boarding bills and stud fees, decided owning a stallion might make sense for a homespun operation. He began his stallion prospect search in the $7,500-$10,000 claiming ranks at Lone Star Park but got the notion during his research to look in the $20,000-$30,000 price range, figuring the limited amount of racing offered because of the ongoing COVID-19 […]

Tobys Heart Favored for Bolton Landing Score

Eight 2-year-old fillies will line up to sprint 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf Aug. 19 in the $85,000 Bolton Landing Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, and impressive first-out winner Tobys Heart has been dubbed the even-money, morning-line favorite. Trained by Brian Lynch, who owns the Jack Milton filly in partnership with Terry Hamilton, Tobys Heart succeeded by 6 3/4 lengths in her first start June 4 while navigating the Bolton Landing distance at Churchill Downs. “She showed me she had some talent prior to it with her works, so it was great to see it produce that sort of performance in her debut,” Lynch said. Kentucky Derby scratches general admission

Churchill Downs officials expect less than 23,000 fans will be able to attend next month’s rearranged Kentucky Derby under an updated health and safety plan. The plan eliminates general admission and standing room only areas, with total capacity limited to less than 14 percent of the 2015 attendance record of 170,513. The 146th runnings of the Derby and Oaks for fillies were postponed from May 1-2 to Sept. 4-5 due to coronavirus concerns. Spectators were not permitted for Churchill Downs’ spring meet, but the track had stated in June that general admission would be limited to the 26-acre infield for […]

Maximum Security wins at Del Mar in first start for new trainer Bob Baffert

Maximum Security won the $150,000 San Diego Handicap by a nose after a photo finish at Del Mar on Saturday, his first start in five months for new trainer Bob Baffert. Under new rider Abel Cedillo, Maximum Security caught pacesetter Midcourt at the top of the stretch and outlasted him to the wire. “That was crazy,” Baffert said. “He won today when he had every reason to get beat. He showed what a great horse he is. He’s such a fighter. I’m glad we got this over with and now he’s in good shape.” Maximum Security ran 1 1/16 miles […]

Ny Traffic takes advantage of extended Kentucky Derby trail

Ny Traffic has taken full advantage of the extended Road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby, even without winning a Derby prep. The Cross Traffic colt ended a hard-charging second Saturday in the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes. Down 2 1/2 lengths to winner Authentic coming into the Monmouth Park stretch, he surged late and finished second by a nose. Authentic barely denied Ny Traffic a graded stakes breakthrough, as well as the 100 Kentucky Derby points and Breeders’ Cup Classic “Win and You’re In” berth the Haskell offered. “I was sure I got him – 100 percent,” Ny Traffic jockey Paco Lopez said […]
