Philadelphia Phillies fire manager Gabe Kapler

The Philadelphia Phillies stated on Thursday that they have fired manager Gabe Kapler. The announcement brings to an end a lengthy 11-day evaluation from Phillies owner John Middleton, who took control of the decision-making process from GM Matt Klentak. Middleton reportedly flew to his players’ offseason homes to interview them about Kapler. Kapler, 44, was hired by Klentak after the 2017 season to substitute Pete Mackanin. His dedication to analytics and his unorthodox administration style, both on and off the field, was supposed to herald a bright new era for the Phillies, who were just emerging from a five-year rebuild. Instead, Kapler was […]

Raiders’ Vontaze Burfict has season-long suspension upheld

Vontaze Burfict will stay suspended for the rest of the 2019 season following Wednesday’s ruling in his appeal hearing.  Per NFL senior vice president of football and internal communications Michael Signora, appeals officer Derrick Brooks upheld the league’s discipline for the Oakland Raiders linebacker The league first revealed Burfict’s suspension on Sept. 30, one day after he was ejected for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Jack Doyle in the second quarter of Oakland’s 31-24 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Sunday that Burfict was unlikely to win his appeal because of “past transgressions that include numerous fines and prior suspensions for repeated violations of player safety […]

Aaron Hicks feels ready to return to NY Yankees’ roster after elbow injury

Fresh off a three-game sweep of the Twins in the ALDS, the Yankees could be getting even more help for the ALCS. Center fielder Aaron Hicks told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he is “definitely ready to go out there and play.” Hicks hasn’t suited up for the Yankees since Aug. 3 due to a right elbow flexor strain. He also suffered a setback during his recovery, making it unclear if he would play again in 2019. But while the Yankees have pushed to make their way into the ALCS, Hicks was working hard behind the scenes in Tampa, and now believes […]

Ryan Zimmerman gives Washington life with big home run

Ryan Zimmerman has spent his whole professional career with the Washington Nationals. He’s the franchise’s leader in hits, home runs and runs batted in. However, he may not have ever delivered a bigger hit. In Monday’s game four of the best-of-five National League Division Series, with his team clinging to a 2-1 lead vs. the two-time defending National League champion Dodgers, Zimmerman clubbed a towering three-run home run to give Washington a 5-1 lead. Nationals ace Max Scherzer scattered four hits and one run over seven innings to earn the victory. Virginia Beach’s Daniel Hudson, a former Old Dominion University […]

Scherzer to pitch for Nationals’ survival in Game 4

Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer answered without hesitation when asked whether an extra day of rest would help him more in terms of quality or quantity. “Everything,” he said. That explains why Nationals manager Dave Martinez saved Scherzer for Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Monday night against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers in the nation’s capital. But now the pressure is on Scherzer and his teammates as they face a win-or-go-home situation against Los Angeles, which holds a 2-1 edge in the best-of-five series. The Dodgers relied on a seven-run sixth inning to sprint to a 10-4 win in a pivotal […]

Sam Darnold won’t return for Jets, Luke Falk to start against Eagles

With New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold now cleared for non-contact practice, he finally seems to be trending in the right direction to play Sunday at the Philadelphia Eagles (2-2).  Jets coach Adam Gase even says the odds are now better “than what they’ve been.” However, if Darnold is incapable to suit up in Week 5, the Jets (0-3) will once again turn to backup Luke Falk.  Falk has taken a careful approach to New York’s passing game since being named the starter, which is understandable considering he never played an NFL snap until called into action in Week 2.  If Falk […]

Kawhi Leonard goes through first full-contact practice with Clippers

Kawhi Leonard participated in full-contact portions of practice for the first time as a Clipper on Wednesday, the team’s third day of training camp, but is remaining careful about his workload. “Everything is going great right now,” Leonard said. “I just don’t want to push it over the top or go on an uphill incline right now with this being my first three days.” Coach Doc Rivers agreed the forward looked “great” while taking part in half of the team’s live drills during an early afternoon practice at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center. What that means for the […]

A’s to start Sean Manaea against Rays in wild-card game

The A’s have named lefty Sean Manaea their starter for the AL Wild Card game on Wednesday against the Rays. Manaea is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in three career starts against Tampa Bay. A’s manager Bob Melvin spoke to media Tuesday and said there was ample discussion on the coaching staff about who would get the ball in the winner-take-all game. Mike Fiers, who has had a fantastic season for Oakland with a 3.91 ERA, was also […]

Warriors Klay Thompson out until at least All-Star break

No team in the NBA will begin the 2019-20 season with more lost star-power than the Golden State Warriors, who for the first time in more than half a decade aren’t considered the title favorite, or even a lock to make the playoffs. Kevin Durant, gone. Andre Iguodala, gone. Klay Thompson, out until at least the All-Star break — per Warriors GM Bob Myers — as he continues recovering from the torn ACL he suffered in Game 6 of last season’s Finals. The typical ACL recovery we see in the NBA is 9-12 months Any timeline that had Thompson returning before the All-Star break […]

Cardinals win NL Central; Brewers settle for wild card

The Cardinals on Sunday needed a win over the Cubs at home or a Brewers loss to the Rockies to win the National League Central for 2019. As it turns out, St. Louis handled its own business, as they homered three times en route to a 9-0 win over the Cubs. Ace Jack Flaherty pitched seven shutout innings, which means he’s allowed a total of 12 runs over his last 16 starts heading into the playoffs. The St. Louis win means that the Cardinals will advance to the National League Division Series against the Braves, who won the NL East. Game 1 is scheduled for Oct. 3 in Atlanta. The Brewers, meantime, […]
