Peralta to have surgery, expected to return for spring

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, manager Torey Lovullo revealed Tuesday. “David has elected to have surgery on his right shoulder,” Lovullo told 98.7 FM’s “Burns & Gambo” show. “I don’t know what the diagnosis is or what the procedure will be, but his 2019 season is over.” Peralta is expected to be fully recovered in time for spring training in February, Lovullo added. The Diamondbacks placed Peralta on the 10-day injured list last week with right AC joint inflammation. He also missed three weeks in July due to an inflamed AC joint. When healthy, the 32-year-old was a productive […]

Nets extend LeVert for 3 years

Caris LeVert has earned a huge raise on his 25th birthday, agreeing to a three-year, $52.5 million extension with the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The new deal counts will kick in for the 2020-21 season. The guard is set to make $2.6 million in 2019-20, his highest salary in four years in the NBA, per Spotrac. He would have been a restricted free agent in 2020 if the two sides couldn’t agree on a new deal. LeVert is coming off an up-and-down 2018-19 season where he set a career high with 13.7 points per game but played only 40 games […]

Cardinals rookie WR Butler out for season

The rookie season of wide receiver Hakeem Butler is over. The Cardinals placed Butler on injured reserve Sunday with his hand injury, and because they did so during the preseason, Butler is ineligible to be one of the two allowed players to return from IR this season. A player must be on the 53-man roster in Week One to be eligible to return later in the season from IR. The Cards also put safety Josh Shaw, who hurt his shoulder in the preseason opener against the Chargers, on injured reserve. Three linebackers were released: Andre Branch, Hayes Pullard and Jeff Holland. […]

Sheffield set for first major-league start as Mariners host Blue Jays

Justus Sheffield needed to take a step back to take a step forward. And that last step comes Friday night, when the left-hander is scheduled to take the mound for the Seattle Mariners when they play host to the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series. Sheffield (0-0, 6.00 ERA), the centerpiece to the offseason trade in which the Mariners sent James Paxton to the New York Yankees, will be making his first major league start. He made one relief appearance April 26 for Seattle, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks over three innings. He was optioned back to Triple-A Tacoma […]

Elway avoids surgery in treating hand condition

Denver Broncos president of football operations John Elway revealed he underwent treatment for Dupuytren’s contracture in both his hands. “I had it on both hands,” Elway told Jarrett Bell of USA Today. “Both of my fingers are straight again. It’s not something that can be cured. But they can definitely treat it. It has a chance to come back. My hands have come back great. We’re trying to get the word out there, because a lot of people have it that don’t realize they have it.” Bell explained Dupuytren’s contracture, which prevents curled fingers from straightening, is known as “Vikings disease” because it is disproportionately found […]

Cowboys’ Cooper likely out for rest of preseason

Amari Cooper will likely not play in a preseason game because of a heel injury suffered while in Oxnard, California, but the Pro Bowl wide receiver is hopeful he can practice with the Dallas Cowboys by the end of the week. Cooper has not practiced since Aug. 6, and the Cowboys will not put him at risk for the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the New York Giants by playing him Saturday against the Houston Texans. The Cowboys do not play their starters in the final preseason game, which is Aug. 29 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cooper said he is dealing with “a form of plantar […]

Sanders to play for 1st time since Achilles tear

Emmanuel Sanders is back and ready to play football. It’s been a long road of recovery for the two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, battling to return after suffering a torn Achilles in his left leg in December. That was only one of his hurdles, however, because it was also revealed recently Sanders had undergone “tightrope” surgery on the opposite ankle as well — to finally fix an issue that began at some point in 2017. With both injuries now completely behind him, Sanders will finally be allowed to again take the field on Monday night — per Adam Schefter of ESPN — when […]

Ravens DB Young likely out for season

Baltimore Ravens nickelback Tavon Young is expected to miss the entire season with a neck injury, coach John Harbaugh announced after Thursday’s 26-13 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Young hurt his neck in practice last weekend, and he didn’t play in the second preseason game. The expected loss of Young is a big hit to one of the best secondaries in the NFL. “Tavon has a more serious issue than we thought,” Harbaugh said. “He has a neck issue. It’s a disk issue. That’s a serious injury. He could be out for the remainder of the season. We’ll know soon. But it doesn’t […]

Beckham Jr. dealing with hip injury

Riley, the slugging rookie for the Atlanta Braves, will not need surgery on his injured right knee and expects to return to the lineup in about two weeks. He revealed the good news before the NL East leaders opened a three-game series against the New York Mets on Tuesday. An MRI revealed a partial tear that will require him to wear a brace but nothing more. Surgery likely would have ended his season. ”It looks super strong,” Riley said. ”(The doctor) was surprised that it was so strong. That’s always good news.” But Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson continues to rehab a bruised right […]
