Gordon Hayward sprains ankle in workout

The Boston Celtics forward twisted his right ankle during a workout in Boston on Tuesday and likely will be questionable for Thursday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, head coach Brad Stevens revealed Wednesday during an interview on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak & Bertrand.” “He actually stayed back in Boston (during the All-Star break) and worked out a bunch of days in a row, and unfortunately yesterday twisted his ankle in one of those workouts,” Stevens said. “So, we’re going to get that reevaluated this morning.” According to Stevens, Hayward suffered the injury playing 1-on-1 with Semi Ojeyele at the […]

Jaguars name Dom Capers senior defensive assistant

Former NFL head coach Dom Capers has joined Jacksonville’s coaching staff as senior defensive assistant, returning to the Jaguars two decades after his first stint with the team. The team says Capers will work closely with defensive coordinator Todd Wash and the other assistants on that side of the ball. Capers served as Jacksonville’s defensive coordinator from 1999-2000 under current executive Tom Coughlin. Capers spent two seasons as the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator (1999-2000) under then-head coach Tom Coughlin, who is now the Jaguars’ executive vice president of football operations. Capers also was a head coach with Carolina (1995-98) and Houston […]

On Tuesday, the organization announced that they agreed to terms with reserve offensive tackle Ty Sambrailo on a three year contract extension, keeping the player in Atlanta through 2021. “We are excited to bring Ty back as a part of our brotherhood,” head coach Dan Quinn said of the decision to retain the strong side blocker. “His versatility has proven to be one of his many strengths. We look forward to him being a valuable piece of the offensive line.” The terms of their agreement with the player were not immediately made known, but Sambrailo made $959,448 in base salary to play this past […]

Aaron Judge fully healthy entering Yankees’ spring training

Yankees star Aaron Judge is “as healthy as he’s been” since entering the big leagues, manager Aaron Boone revealed Sunday.  The 26-year-old slugger has dealt with a variety of injuries throughout his career, including shoulder and wrist issues that caused him to miss some time. He had arthroscopic shoulder surgery after the 2017 season and wasn’t fully recovered entering last year’s spring training. But that won’t be the case this year. “He’s so much further ahead of the game from where he was last year,” Boone said, per ESPN. “A lot of his winter [last year] was poured into the rehab of the shoulder. “This year, it’s been about […]

Knicks beat Hawks to end team-record losing streak

The losses had dated to Jan. 4, a stretch of 18 straight games. And at this point, a win wasn’t going to make much difference, other than giving the downtrodden Knicks the chance to retreat to the All-Star break with the gloom of a franchise-record losing streak behind them. And as they departed — with most of the team bound for a week-long vacation, no one in the All-Star Game and only Kevin Knox and Dennis Smith Jr. heading to Charlotte for any part of the festivities — they left relieved about ending the futility with a 106-91 win over […]

Ravens to trade Joe Flacco to Broncos

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said in early January that quarterback Joe Flacco would have a market, and the prediction proved correct. The Ravens on Wednesday agreed in principle to trade Flacco to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a fourth-round pick, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via sources informed of the situation. Rapoport added that Flacco, who had three years remaining on his contract, will need to rework his deal for the Broncos. Baltimore and Denver are not allowed to publicly comment on the transaction until the NFL’s new calendar year begins on March 13, when the deal should be finalized. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to […]

Reliever Sergio Romo, Marlins agree on one-year deal

As first reported by MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez, the Marlins have agree to a one-year, $2.5 million deal with right-hander Sergio Romo (plus incentives). The contract is still pending a physical. Earlier on Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic mentioned that the sides were in negotiations. Romo is a dinosaur, and I’m not just saying that because his 36th birthday is approaching. Unlike most modern relievers, he lacks the fastball velocity to overwhelm batters—his four-seamer averaged just 86.4 miles per hour in 2018. Instead, he relies heavily on a “frisbee” slider, throwing more of those last season (655) than all of his other pitches combined (474). At the same time, […]

Buccaneers release DE Vinny Curry after just one season

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Vinny Curry on Tuesday after the eighth-year defensive end spent one season with the team. The move comes four weeks before the start of free agency and effectively makes Curry an unrestricted free agent. The Buccaneers signed Curry last March after he had been released by the defending-champion Philadelphia Eagles four days earlier. That move was part of an overhaul to a defensive line that also include the signings of Beau Allen and Mitch Unrein, the trade for Jason Pierre-Paul and the selection of Vita Vea in the first round of the 2018 draft. The […]
