Southgate not ruling out staying England boss beyond Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate has not ruled out remaining England manager through to the 2026 World Cup, saying Thursday that he would evaluate his future following this summer’s European Championship. Southgate, who has been in charge of England since 2016, has a contract with the English Football Association until December of this year. “There’s a fair chance half the coaches won’t be here after the Euros. That’s international football,” Southgate said following Thursday’s draw for the UEFA Nations League in Paris. Looking for the best online betting site and Live betting? Hornets to trade Gordon Hayward to Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder fortified their roster for a playoff push by getting Gordon Hayward from the Charlotte Hornets for guards Tre Mann and Vasilije Micic and forward Davis Bertans, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The Hornets also will receive draft compensation in the deal, sources said. Hayward is averaging 14.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game this season for the Hornets, although he hasn’t played since Dec. 26 because of a left calf issue. Injuries have been a constant issue for Hayward for years, as he has played 52 or fewer matches in each of the past five seasons, including 25 games this season. Looking for the […]

Erasmus back as Springbok coach; Flannery, Brown in technical team

Rassie Erasmus will coach champions South Africa to the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with former Ireland hooker Jerry Flannery added to the technical team as defense coach and ex-New Zealand flyhalf Tony Brown signed to sharpen the attack. Erasmus returns as head coach after four years, a role he held when they lifted the World Cup trophy in 2019, before moving to director of rugby as they retained their title in France last year. He had a heavy hand in that latest success, though, and takes over the position left by Jacques Nienaber, who has joined Irish side Leinster. Highly-prized […]

Astros’ Jose Altuve gets to stay ‘home’ with contract extension

Ten months from free agency, Jose Altuve knew what he wanted. “Houston is my home,” he said. He achieved his goal to stay with the Astros, agreeing to a contract that will pay $125 million from 2025 to 2029, when he will be 39. “I have obviously two homes,” he said Wednesday at a news conference, a day after the deal was announced. “I grew up in Venezuela, my country. Every time I go there, I tell my wife, ‘Let’s go home.’ And then when it’s time to come back, I tell her, ‘Let’s come back home.'” An eight-time All-Star, two-time World Series […]

England’s John Ryder retires after back-to-back losses

England’s John Ryder announced his retirement from boxing Tuesday at age 35 following back-to-back losses. Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs), rated No. 9 by ESPN at super middleweight, made his announcement 10 days after he was dropped four times en route to a ninth-round TKO loss to Mexico’s Jaime Munguia. That loss followed a wide-points defeat in May 2023 to Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s top star. “Although I didn’t manage to win that world title, I’ve achieved and experienced more than I could ever have imagined when I first put on a pair of boxing gloves,” said Ryder. “I wouldn’t change that for […]

Surprised Bottas backs Hamilton to succeed at Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton’s former Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas has stated he expects the seven-time Formula One world champion to be a good fit for Ferrari when the British driver moves to the Italian team next year. The switch was announced last week after Hamilton, 39, exercised a break clause in his new contract and signed for the sport’s oldest, historically most successful and most glamorous team on a multiyear deal from the start of the 2025 season. “I never thought it would happen,” Bottas said at a livery launch in London for his Sauber-run Stake F1 team on Monday night. “I thought in my mind he would stay at Mercedes, but […]

Bayer Leverkusen win DFB Pokal thriller, go 30 games unbeaten

Bayer Leverkusen reached 30 matches unbeaten in all competitions this season with a 3-2 comeback victory over VfB Stuttgart to reach the DFB Pokal semifinals Tuesday. Jonathan Tah’s 90th-minute header won the game and spared Xabi Alonso’s team of having to play extra time ahead of a league game Saturday versus title rivals Bayern Munich. Tah was left completely unmarked to head in from close range and complete the comeback for the Bundesliga leaders after they had twice cancelled out Stuttgart goals. Leverkusen are the first team in Europe’s top five leagues to reach 30 games undefeated in all competitions from the start of the season since Juventus […]

Foden hits hat trick as Man City rally to beat Brentford

Phil Foden scored a brilliantly composed hat trick as Manchester City fought back to collect a 3-1 victory at battling Brentford on Monday and close to within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool with a game in hand. Despite almost constant City pressure, Brentford led with a Neal Maupay goal after 21 minutes only for Foden to level just before half-time then add two more excellent goals as the visitors took control with another display of possession and probing. Liverpool, defeated by Arsenal on Sunday, lead the table on 51 points from 23 games, but City are up to 49 from 22 and Arsenal on 49 from 23. “He always had an […]

Joshua Buatsi wins WBA title eliminator, sets sights on Bivol

Joshua Buatsi took a big step toward a world light heavyweight title shot with a unanimous-decision victory over English rival Dan Azeez on Saturday at Wembley’s OVO Arena in London. Buatsi earned scores of 116-110, 117-109 and 117-109 in an eliminator for the WBA world light heavyweight title, held by Dmitry Bivol. Buatsi, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, also claimed the British and Commonwealth titles from Azeez after showing greater accuracy and ambition. Azeez was knocked down twice in the 11th round, but he argued both were slips. Regardless, Buatsi was a worthy winner after resisting a spirited finish from […]
