Charlatan ends bumpy year with Grade 1 win in Malibu Stakes

Charlatan tracked favorite Nashville to the quarter pole and then drew off to a 4½-length triumph in the $300,000 Malibu Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita’s opening day. Ridden for the first time by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, Charlatan ran seven furlongs in 1 minute, 21.50 seconds. Trained by fellow Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, the chestnut colt had been idle since May 2. Charlatan paid $5.20, $3.60 and $2.60 as the 8-5 second choice. A 2-year-old son of Quality Road, Prime Factor always has been a highly regarded prospect, selling for $900,000 as a yearling. Flashing speed right from the start, Prime Factor vied for the lead through a quarter in 22.27 seconds, then took command through a half in 45.33 and pulled away to complete the six-furlong sprint in 1:10.38. Authentic Retired, To Stand For $75,000 At Spendthrift

Authentic, the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic and G1 Kentucky Derby winner has been retired to B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, KY where he will stand in 2021 for a fee of $75,000 S&N. “Authentic is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of horse, and Mr. Hughes is very proud that we are able to share him with 5,300-plus MyRacehorse owners through what has been an incredible run. That alone made this decision different and very difficult. Ultimately, we just felt there wasn’t a lot more to accomplish for a Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, so we have made the decision […]

Princess Secret Denied Entry Into Breeders’ Cup

Princess Secret (Khozan), winner of the Susan’s Girl S. and My Dear Girl S. for owner and trainer Daniel Pita, was denied entry into Friday’s GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies after testing positive for a banned substance. An Oct. 26 blood test administered by the Breeders’ Cup Out-Of-Competition program turned up the presence of Stanozolol, an anabolic steroid clearly prohibited by Breeders’ Cup under its conditions of entry. According to Breeders’ Cup constructs, any horse that tests positive for anabolic steroids or any ARCI-prohibited substances in any out-of-competition sample within six months of participation in the Breeders’ Cup is ruled ineligible […]

Magical, a seven-time Group 1 champion, who was second to Enable in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Turf, is expected to lead his charge. She will be considered for the Turf and the Filly & Mare Turf. Magical showed she is as good as ever this year when […]

Elements could prove challenging in Mighty Heart’s bid to capture Triple Crown

On Saturday, the Carroll-trained Mighty Heart will run in the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack looking to become the first thoroughbred in 17 years to attain the OLG Canadian Triple Crown. But there’s rain in this week’s forecast — 90 per cent Wednesday and 70 per cent Thursday — and that could impact the one-eyed colt’s bid to complete the historic sweep in the 1 1/2-mile turf race. “I’m really not happy with the weather forecast,” Carroll stated Monday during a media gathering at her barn at Woodbine. “Obviously it’s going to be a yielding turf. “We did put […]

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile 2020: Preview & Odds

Vekoma and Complexity rightfully have been grabbing most of the headlines as the Grade 1 winners choose between the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and Dirt Mile. But as their connections make up their minds, the Dirt Mile field surrounding the stars has been filling in very nicely. The deep field could include Art Collector, Rushie and Jesus’ Team, three horses on this year’s Kentucky Derby Trail. It also features a slew of runners who have regained their top condition recently after long losing streaks. Knicks Go had not won since his upset triumph in the 2018 Breeders’ Futurity (G1).
