Orioles put Dwight Smith Jr. on IL; John Means Iffy for Opening Day start

The Baltimore Orioles placed outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. on the 10-day injured list Monday, and manager Brandon Hyde isn’t sure if left-hander John Means will be able to start the opener at Boston on Friday night. Smith recently returned to the team after testing positive for COVID-19 and still needs time to get into baseball shape. Hyde said the Orioles have the option of activating Smith “at any time” and that he could still be on the opening day roster. But at this point, Smith is still trying to work his way back. “He just hasn’t participated in a full-squad workout,” Hyde said. Means developed a […]

Yoan Moncada rejoins White Sox from 10 day injury list

Yoán Moncada is back with the White Sox, and that’s good news when it comes to his ability to be a part of the Opening Day roster. Moncada was located on the 10-day injured list last Friday, and with no reason or timetable for his return provided by the White Sox, there were legitimate questions as to whether he’d be ready for Opening Day on July 24. But back in major league camp with a week before the season begins, Moncada could have enough ramp-up time to be ready for the season-opener versus the Minnesota Twins. Whether a week will be […]

MLB shortens 2020 draft from 40 to 5 rounds

Major League Baseball will cut its 2020 draft to five rounds, as owners looking to save costs in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic pushed for fewer rounds over the objection of front-office officials, sources told ESPN. The plan, which has been relayed to scouting directors, will let teams to sign an unlimited number of undrafted players for $20,000. The draft is expected to start June 10. MLB suspends Alex Cora for conduct with Astros

On Wednesday, commissioner Rob Manfred released his report detailing MLB’s investigation into the 2018 Red Sox. The Red Sox were said to have illegally stolen signs that season — a World Series championship season — and Manfred’s report affirmed those suspicions. Video replay operator J.T.
