Ferrari’s gains see it emerge as Red Bull’s nearest rival

Although still 20 seconds shy of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull at the chequered flag, Ferrari’s performance at the Japanese Grand Prix showed just how much progress the team has made with its winter of car development. Just six months ago, the Italian team concluded the same race 40 seconds adrift of race winner Verstappen, ranking fourth and sixth in the final classification compared to Sunday’s third and fourth. Defeating Red Bull in a consecutive fight (i.e., without the help of a Verstappen retirement, as happened in Australia this year) still seems like a stretch, but on the right circuit in the right circumstances, […]

LAFC finalizing deal with Olivier Giroud through 2025

MLS side LAFC is concluding a deal with AC Milan and France international forward Olivier Giroud, sources confirmed to ESPN. Giroud, 37, is set to join up with LAFC after completing his obligations to the France national team at Euro 2024, which is set to take place between June 14 and July 14. The MLS summer transfer window opens on July 18 and lasts through Aug. 14. The deal is expected to last through at least the end of the 2025 season and would make Giroud a designated player for LAFC. LAFC owns Giroud’s discovery rights — the right of first refusal among MLS clubs – meaning there […]

Clippers to get Russell Westbrook back next week, says Ty Lue

LA Clippers point guard Russell Westbrook will return to the lineup some time next week, coach Ty Lue stated before his team’s 125-117 win at Portland on Friday night. Westbrook could be back to game action as soon as Monday versus the Indiana Pacers, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Monday’s game versus the Pacers will mark three weeks from when Westbrook underwent surgery to repair a fractured left hand he suffered March 1 against the Washington Wizards. The Clippers have missed the aggressive energy and hustle of one of the league’s top sixth men. They are 6-5 without their one-time MVP point guard. Westbrook is averaging 11.1 points, 5.1 […]

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (elbow) won’t throw for 3-4 weeks

New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole won’t throw for three to four weeks due to a nerve irritation and edema in his throwing elbow. “I think we’ve determined that we just got a little too hot a little too quick,” Cole said before Saturday’s game against Toronto. “I just got to a certain point where we just didn’t hit baseline and recovery. That’s important at this time of the year.” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman stated that if the team needed a 40-man roster spot, Cole would be placed on the 60-day injured list, which means the earliest the AL Cy Young award winner […]

Verstappen wins again, skirting questions of Red Bull future

After comfortably winning the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix on Saturday, Max Verstappen and Red Bull are cruising toward another championship season. Both, however, are refusing to be the first to blink in the deepening mystery regarding the three-time Formula One world champion’s future beyond 2024. The sort of victory witnessed at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit on Saturday night is what we’ve come to expect from this dominant Red Bull outfit. Verstappen led from pole, only briefly dropping to second after an early Safety Car, and was so far out in front that he was turning down his engine setting late on. It was utterly […]

Arsenal thrash Sheffield United to move within two points of top

Mikel Arteta’s team are third with 61 points after 27 games, a point behind Manchester City but with a much better goal difference than their title rivals. Senior Alpine staff resign after poor start to new F1 season

Renault-owned Alpine revealed another managerial shake-up on Monday with three new bosses replacing technical director Matt Harman and aerodynamics head Dirk de Beer, who have left the Formula One team after a dismal start to the season. Alpine said in a statement that both had chosen to leave and seek new challenges. The three new technical directors are Joe Burnell for engineering, David Wheater for aerodynamics and Ciaron Pilbeam for performance. All three will report to team principal Bruno Famin, who took over from the departed Otmar Szafnauer as interim boss last August and now has the permanent position. In the space […]

Athletic Club beat Atletico Madrid to reach Copa del Rey final

Brothers Inaki and Nico Williams scored to help Athletic Bilbao secure a 3-0 semi-final victory over Atletico Madrid on Thursday and a 4-0 aggregate victory that sent the Basque side into their third Copa de Rey final in the last five years. Ernesto Valverde’s team punished the visitors with clinical counter-attacks, starting when Inaki Williams struck in the 13th minute with a superb volley from his brother’s cross. Inaki returned the favor to his younger sibling in the 42nd minute, setting up Nico for a simple close-range finish. “Our connection is real and it’s working very well, we understand each other,” Nico Williams told […]

Pirates, Mitch Keller agree to five-year extension

Right-hander Mitch Keller and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a five-year, $77 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN, locking up another young core player as the team continues to try to return to the postseason for the first time in nearly a decade. The deal, which starts this year and ends after the 2028 season, will pay Keller $7.5 million in 2024 — more than $2 million above where he had settled with the team in arbitration, according to sources. In what would’ve been his final year of arbitration in 2025, Keller will receive $15 million. For the three free agent years […]
