Canelo Álvarez’s Next Fight Is May 4 vs. American Opponent amid Jermall Charlo Rumors

Canelo Álvarez confirmed Tuesday he aims to fight May 4 versus an adversary to be determined.

The undisputed super middleweight champion stated he expects to go up against an American fighter, which would take a bout with Jaime Munguía off the table.

Ring Magazine’s Joseph Santoliquito reported Monday the signs are pointing toward Álvarez vs. Jermall Charlo on the first weekend in May in Las Vegas.

Canelo indicated Monday he was going to make an announcement imminently regarding his boxing career. Fans were left to guess what might be coming, but an event around Cinco de Mayo was the obvious assumption since fighting that weekend has become an annual tradition for him.

Immediately after his unanimous decision triumph over Jermell Charlo last September, the 33-year-old sounded like somebody eager to put the gloves back on.

Ahead of Tuesday’s proclamation, Boxing Scene’s Jake Donovan downplayed the likelihood of Munguía challenging Álvarez.

He reported discussions between the two camps hadn’t progressed to the point where plans could be finalized this quickly.

Jermall Charlo is one of the most logical alternatives. He’s undefeated with 22 knockouts in 33 fights. The WBC middleweight champion most recently earned a unanimous decision over José Benavidez Jr. in November.

Beyond his in-ring credentials, there’s the intrigue of Charlo avenging his twin brother’s one-sided loss to Canelo.

Plenty of boxing fans are already looking further down the road. Opposing Charlo in May might merely be the next step toward the highly anticipated matchup between Canelo and Terence Crawford. If not Crawford then Álvarez could line up David Benavidez for the fall, which is a battle with just as much hype.
