Dallas OT Collins had shoulder surgery

Dallas Cowboys right tackle La’el Collins told Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff after the 2018 season.

Per Hill, Collins said Dallas will “be cautious with him throughout OTAs and minicamp.” Collins believes he will be ready for training camp in July.

The 25-year-old, who is entering the final year of his contract, has started every game at right tackle for the Cowboys since 2017.

He started 19 games over two seasons at left guard in 2015 and 2016. A torn ligament in his right big toe ended his 2016 campaign after three weeks.

Collins joins a list of Cowboys who’ve had surgery in 2019, including Lawrence, Byron Jones (hip), Taco Charlton (shoulder) and Antwaun Woods (shoulder). The good news is that, as it stands, none listed here are expected to miss any regular season games. This will mean the Cowboys need additional camp bodies at certain positions though, and they’ve already begun the task of finding them to fill the 90-man roster.

This isn’t the first time Collins has played through pain to remain on the field. Since being converted from guard to tackle as a means of replacing Doug Free, Collins has increased his value with the organization. Now entering the final year of a two-year, $15.4 million deal he signed in 2017, the former undrafted free agent out of LSU is looking to show the Cowboys he should remain in Dallas going forward.

As the team works yet again to figure out the situation at left guard, a void left by Ronald Leary departing in free agency and the move of Collins to the tackle role, they’re likely not apt at the moment to see a talent like Collins walk in 2020.
