Jazz’s Bojan Bogdanovic to undergo season-ending wrist surgery

At this point, we still don’t know if the 2019-20 NBA season will be restarted. But if it is, the Utah Jazz will be without one of their key contributors, as forward Bojan Bogdanovic is set to have season-ending surgery on his right wrist, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The surgery will repair the scapholunate ligament in his right wrist. Bogdanovic initially injured the wrist in January, but he continued to play through the pain. Now, with the future of the season undefined, Bogdanovic has decided to make the move for surgery.

The good news for the Jazz, who signed Bogdanovic to a four-year deal last offseason, is that he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of the 2020-21 season. In the short term though, Bogdanovic will be missed if the season is resumed.

Bogdanovic is Utah’s second leading scorer, averaging 20.2 on the season. He also added 4.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per performance, while also providing the Jazz with a legitimate long-distance threat — on the season he was shooting 41 percent from three-point range. Bogdanovic was also one of just two players to average 20 points, shoot 40 percent from long distance and 90 percent on free throws on the season.

Forward Joe Ingles will likely slide into Utah’s starting power forward spot in Bogdanovic’s absence.

After the news of Bogdanovic’s impending surgery broke, Jazz teammate Donovan Mitchell took to Twitter to recognize Bogdanovic’s toughness after he played through an injury.

“Salute to my brotha [Bojan Bogdanovic] for fighting through for us all year… one of the toughest dudes I know!,” Mitchell wrote. “Get right and ready for next season.”

At the time that the season was suspended in March, the Jazz were fourth overall in the Western Conference with a 41-23 record. Thus, if the season ultimately resumes and the seeding remains as is, the Jazz would face off against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the postseason. The teams split their two meetings during the regular season.
