Jets to sign former Vikings LB Barr

The New York Jets are about to land a major contributor for Gregg Williams’ defense.

Monday night, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Jets are set to sign standout linebacker Anthony Barr, who previously spent time with the Minnesota Vikings. This followed a report from earlier in the day that New York was upping their pursuit of the UCLA product. The move won’t be made official until the new league year begins on March 13, but the Jets can rest assured that they will now have a focal point in this defense.

Over the weekend, Connor Hughes of The Athletic said that the Jets are “very high” on Barr, but that the Lions were expected to be the favorites. Now that they have made their big splash with Flowers, the eyes of the Jets turned to that of the free agent linebacker. The Jets reached an agreement with Barr that was enough to bring him to the Big Apple. Although terms of the deal have not been revealed yet.  “A player on the (Jets) radar: LB Anthony Barr. They’re very — very — high on him. Wouldn’t be surprised if they offer him the most money when market opens. They’ll be in it for him until the end,” Hughes tweeted on Friday.

Through his five seasons with the Vikings since being drafted with the No. 9 overall pick, Barr has made the Pro Bowl four times and has started all 71 games that he has played in his NFL career to this point. He has 338 total tackles to his name to go along with 13.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles. He played last season in Minnesota at around $12 million on his fifth-year option on his rookie deal, but it appears that Spotrac’s market value does not see him making anything near that despite what some initially believed about his asking price. While there was some concern about Barr’s ability after he turned in a less-productive season with only 55 combined tackles and three sacks, but the Jets were not worried. New head coach Adam Gase knows that the longtime Vikings star will fit in with Williams defense and that he can help disrupt the AFC East opponents.
