Monday Night – Bet on National Championship

The defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide and the Clemson Tigers will square off Monday night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. For the National Championship. In what will be the first time in history that we have the same matchup game in back-to-back seasons.

Clemson comes into this game with a lot of confidence after trouncing Ohio State 31-0 in one of the two CFP semifinal matchups. Still, Alabama is favored by almost a touchdown at most sportsbooks in Las Vegas. Don’t fret because there is only one game left to bet on this NCAAF season – there are plenty of props for the big game.

The Alabama Crimson Tide have seemingly been on top of the college football world forever. No matter how many players graduate, no matter how many freshmen need to step into a big role, Alabama is always one of the best teams in the nation.

However, there is one area the team has struggled in for bettors, which is as a single-digit favorite. Since the start of the 2010 season, Alabama has been a single-digit fave 24 times. In those games, the Tide are a respectable 17-7 SU, but a mere 9-14-1 ATS.

The bulk of those losing ways came during a span that stretched from the end of the 2012 season to the start of the 2014 season when Alabama went 0-6-1 ATS as a single-digit favorite.

In a rare role reversal, professional sports bettors are backing the favorite and the so-called public squares are siding with the underdog in Monday Night college football national championship game.

Perception is reality for the public, which is all over 6½-point underdog Clemson on the money line, at plus-190, against Alabama.

The Crimson Tide, riding a 26-game win streak that includes a 45-40 victory over the Tigers in last year’s national title game, covered the 13-point spread in a 24-7 win over Washington in the College Football Playoff semifinal. But Clemson looked more impressive in annihilating Ohio State 31-0 in the other semifinal.

Alabama, gunning for its fifth national title in eight years under coach Nick Saban, opened as a 7-point favorite and was quickly bet to 6½ at most books.

The public also has driven down the money line. The Crimson Tide is a minus-220 favorite, which is a much shorter price than for most teams laying 6½ points. This is only the second time this season that Alabama will close as a single-digit fave, with the Tide beating LSU 10-0 as 7-point favorites earlier this year.

Wiseguys are pointing to Alabama’s top-ranked defense, which has scored 11 touchdowns this season. The Crimson Tide also has scored four touchdowns on special teams.

The total opened at 54½ and has been bet to 50½ at most places.

Favorites are 26-14 straight-up in bowl games this season and 14-25-1 ATS. The over is 16-24.
