Pittsburgh Penguins at Colorado Avalanche

Pittsburgh Penguins at Colorado Avalanche

The Penguins look to snap their two game slide and get themselves back in the mix in the Metro division while the Avalanche look to get anything going to start to climb out of the Central basement.

The Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t had the start to the season that they or many others expected and while it was a growing process for the first little but things are starting to heat up and the pressure is mounting for one of the preseason Cup favourites. The Pens obviously still have some of the game’s best players but they haven’t been able to demonstrate that on a consistent basis as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have struggled at times and Phil Kessel has been a ghost this season since coming over from Toronto. The Penguins sit in fifth place in the Metro and are nine points back of the division leading Rangers and while this match up looks to be favourable on paper they face off against a goaltender in Reto Berra who has played very well this season and will be looking to prove he deserves the starting job in Denver.

The Avs sit in last place in the Central and while that is nothing to write home about they are in the league’s toughest division and are one of the better sub .500 teams we have seen in some time. Colorado has the talent to do some damage but a playoff spot this season although we are still in December seems bleak as the division is stacked from top to bottom with some of the league’s best teams and staring at an eight point deficit just to get into the playoffs is a tough task to overcome. However, the Avs are in a decent spot here coming off a win and they get the Pens at home who haven’t been overly strong on the road and in a game where goaltending can make the difference I think Colorado can steal one here with Reto Berra.
