Raiders add Ryan Grant to revamped WR corps

Former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Ryan Grant signed with the Oakland Raiders on Wednesday.

Grant becomes the latest addition to the Raiders’ revamped wide receiver corps this offseason, joining trade addition Antonio Brown and free-agent addition Tyrell Williams.

Grant, 28, struggled to find a niche in the Colts’ offense last season, as it didn’t take long for him to slide down the team’s depth chart.

The thought last season was that Grant would come in with extra motivation and solve the question on who would be the Colts’ second receiver to go with T.Y. Hilton after the Baltimore Ravens decided against signing Grant after the team said he failed his physical.

Grant battled an ankle injury during the season and his role diminished as the season progressed. He finished with 35 receptions for 334 yards and 1 touchdown. Grant had nine receptions for 65 yards in the final eight games of the season. He spent the first four years of his career with the Washington Redskins and had 84 receptions for 985 yards and 6 touchdowns in 64 games.

Before he joined the Colts, Grant had agreed to four-year, $29 million deal with the Ravens. But, that contract was voided after he failed a physical because of an ankle issue.

The Raiders struggled in 2018 and finished with a 4-12 record but they’ve completely rebuilt their offense this offseason. They traded for disgruntled Steelers receiver Antonio Brown and signed wideout Tyrell Williams, along with offensive lineman Trent Brown.

“It was a tough year,” coach Jon Gruden told NFL Network recently. “No doubt. For the fans, for the players, for the coaches and for me. But necessary. It was something we had to get through and we got through and we’re excited about the future.

“We’re on schedule. We had a great offseason. … We’ve established a really good work ethic in our building. Our guys know how to prepare, how to practice and we’ve got a good environment.” The Raiders will have three first-round picks in the NFL Draft later this month.
