Marsh returning to Seahawks on 1 year deal

Two years after being traded by Seattle, Marsh will return to town with a much better chance to contribute defensively.

Looking to add some bite to their pass rush without breaking the bank, the Seahawks will turn to a familiar face.

According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, Seattle has agreed to terms with defensive end Cassius Marsh on a one-year deal.

Originally drafted by Seattle in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Marsh played three seasons for the team, recording 41 tackles and 3.0 sacks in 37 games. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound defender struggled to carve out a role behind starters Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett, but he emerged as a valuable special teams player, playing over 200 special teams snaps in each of his final two seasons with the Seahawks.

With Marsh unable to crack the rotation at defensive end and struggling to transition to linebacker, Seattle shipped him to New England for a seventh-round pick prior to the start of the 2017 regular season.

Marsh lasted just nine games with Patriots before being released, but the move ended up being a blessing in disguise, as he enjoyed his finest NFL season with the 49ers in 2018. Though he started only three games, he played more than 50 percent of the team’s defensive snaps and became an important part of San Francisco’s pass rush, establishing career-highs in sacks (5.5) and quarterback hits (14).

Despite his strong play, however, the 49ers released Marsh immediately after acquiring pass rusher Dee Ford from the Chiefs last month, making him an unrestricted free agent. While Ford’s addition made him expendable in San Francisco, the 26-year old Marsh should have a better opportunity to make an impact in Seattle than he did during his first stint with the team. Bennett and Avril are no longer on the team and aside from Clark, no other defensive ends on the roster recorded more than 3.0 sacks last year, leaving plenty of snaps up for grabs in training camp.
